BLACKSBURG, Va. – Vincent Wyatt captured his second 60-meter hurdles title of the season to lead Radford track and field Friday night at the Virginia Tech Invitational hosted by the Hokies at Rector Field House.
Seeded second on the performance list entering the day, Wyatt ran a 7.87 (fifth-fastest in program history) to top all qualifiers in the preliminary round. He then came .02 of a second away from tying the program record for the event with his 7.78 performance in the finals. The junior turned in a 7.76 effort at this meet last year. His performance was enough to edge South Carolina's Jermaine Collier by .02 of a second to take the title.
In addition to his title, Wyatt now has the fourth-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in the nation. If he remains in the top 16 at the conclusion of the indoor regular season, Wyatt will advance to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships for back-to-back years.
On top of Wyatt's effort, 14 personal records were set. Tyler Lamott (50-00.00) and Garrett Knudson (47-02.25) provided two PRs in the men's weight throw to place 11th and 13th, respectively.
A trio of distance runners set personal bests in the 1,000-meter run: Chaz Porter (2:36.44), Joey Hannah (2:39.84) and Graham Schlickenmeyer (2:47.70). Phillip Hovatter tied for 11th in the pole vault with his 12-03.50 mark, which is a PR.
For the women, it was the distance crew leading the way as Teresa Williamson (3:00.33) and Malina Richardson (3:14.77) delivered PRs to place 13th and 26th, respectively, in the 1,000-meter run. Madeline Thomas represented the Highlanders in the mile, covering the distance in a personal-best 5:37.52.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the men's high jump and the women's pole vault.
