GOLDEN GOAL HOMECOMING TRIUMPH FOR RU MEN'S SOCCER

The Radford (8-2-2, 5-0-0) men's soccer program celebrated its 40th anniversary Saturday with a Homecoming overtime victory over Campbell (3-7-0, 0-2-0), 3-2. Stephen Hudgens scored his second straight game-winning goal to record the sixth straight win for the Highlanders. RU owns the Big South's longest unbeaten streak at 10 games and have match Coastal Carolina's six-game winning streak.
Hudgens scored his fifth goal of the season in the 93rd minute on assists from Evan Szklennik and Felix Steinhauser to end the game. He took a pass atop the 18 yard box and drilled the game-winner into the left side of the goal. Earlier in the game, Radford took a 2-0 lead on goals from Daniel O'Keefe (26') and Dario Redondo (57'), but the Camels fought back to tie the game in less than two minutes after falling behind by a pair of goals.
Hernan Mogollon scored on a direct kick in the 58th minute to cut the RU lead in half, and then Bradley Farias put home a rebound to tie the game in the 59th.
"It's an emotional college soccer game, we knew they would keep fighting and playing because they're a talented, well-coached team," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "I am pleased with our character and determination. We had so many chances, but we couldn't put the game to bed. We needed three goals tonight, and we got three."
Radford dominated the offensive chances throughout the game with 28 total shots and 13 on goal, but needed the overtime strike from Hudgens to remain perfect in Big South play and atop the league standings with 15 points.
"It's about grabbing max points, and we have done that so far," Reeves said. "The group is motivated and committed to doing the details to win games."
At halftime, the program recognized nearly 50 former players and coaches along with its five Radford Athletics Hall of Fame inductees as part of the 40th anniversary celebration.
"It was a fantastic night for the program," Reeves said speaking of the alumni coming back for the 40th anniversary. "I can't tell you how much I appreciate them coming back. Life is busy, and everyone has schedules and things going on. We had a great turnout and a lot of fun at the alumni game this morning. It was a great event."
Radford travels Friday to High Point for a 7:00 p.m. start at Vert Field against the Panthers.
