RADFORD WINS 7TH STRAIGHT, KNOCKS HPU FROM UNBEATEN RANKS

|

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Chel Ho Park Kim converted a turnover deep inside the High Point defensive back line into an unassisted game-winner Friday night at Vert Field as Radford (9-2-2, 6-0-0) won its seventh straight game and stayed among the teams unbeaten and untied in the Big South and atop the standings with 18 points. RU's 2-1 win over the Panthers (5-5-1, 3-0-1) dropped HPU from the max points group in the league standings.

Park Kim's goal came after a miscommunicated ball by the HPU back line left him on the doorstep, and he converted his second goal and first game-winner of the season. It came just six minutes after Neil Martorana tied the game at a goal apiece with a bullet from 30 yards out. Martorana one-timed a header feed from Kieran Roberts to beat the Panther keeper in the lower right corner of the net.

Both goals were in response to High Point taking the lead in the 55th minute, just 1:01 prior to Martorana's equalizer.

In a battle of the Big South's two most stout defenses, shots were at a premium. Each keeper made just one save on the night as the Highlanders pushed three shots on frame, and High Point managed just two. The one save Aitor Pouseu Blanco did make was an outstanding effort to preserve the lead on a Panther set piece direct kick from 20 yards away with nine minutes to play.

"As expected, this was a close, hard-fought conference game that hinged on a few moments," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "High Point is an excellent team and this is a really hard place to come and play for a number of reasons. This is a massive road win for our group."

The win did not come easily. High Point played a man down for 55 minutes of the contest and managed a lead in the 55th minute. But the Highlanders responded immediately to take back any momentum the Panthers gained by taking the lead.

"We did not play well tonight, but I am pleased with our commitment and competitive desire to find a way," Reeves said. "Our group has stuck together well, and we showed great spirit tonight, which was evident with the two good goals we scored."

Radford travels Tuesday to Charlottesville, Va. to face #10 Virginia in its final non-conference tilt of the season.

"We must recover and prepare intensely to turn around fast for an exceptional UVA team," Reeves said.
