NATIONALLY-RANKED UVA SNAPS RADFORD WINNING STREAK

BOX SCORE |

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Radford had its seven-game winning and 11-game unbeaten streak snapped Tuesday at Klockner Stadium, 3-0. The Highlanders and Cavaliers battled scoreless for the first 65 minutes before the No. 22-ranked hosts put home the night's first goal prior to adding an insurance tally just three minutes later. The final score came with five minutes remaining.

Wesley Suggs scored his first career goal on a header from Scott Thomsen on a set piece in the 66th minute that proved to be the game winner. Nicko Corriveau added the second goal in the 69th on assists from Thomsen and Ryan Zinkhan. The final goal of the night came on a rebound by Pablo Aguilar and the third helper of the game from Thomsen.

"The result is obviously hugely disappointing, but I am proud of our groups preparation, resilience and unity with some of the things that have happened these past couple of weeks," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "We knew against an excellent and exceptionally well-coached UVA team we would need to be consistent with our defending and take any opportunities we were able to create. Unfortunately, our two best chances that would have put us a goal up were denied and allowing a quick second goal meant we had to chase the game a little earlier than we would normally like."

Despite the loss, Radford goalkeeper Aitor Pouseu Blanco was stellar in net. The net minder made three spectacular, point-blank saves, including a turnaway of what would have been an own goal. The Radford offense also had its chances. Stephen Hudgens notched the first shot on goal of the game early in the first half, but get past UVA keeper, Calle Brown.

The best chance, however, came in the 63rd minute with the game still scoreless. Bismark Amofah gathered a ball at the 18 moving forward and looked as though he would find the lower left part of the net with Brown caught off his line, but Suggs was there to record the team save and keep the game knotted. The Cavaliers would score three minutes later.

Radford gets back to Big South play Saturday at Gardner-Webb.

"We had some solid performances, but not enough guys play at their very best tonight which is what you need as they have some great players and were clearly the better team tonight," Reeves said. "We must regroup quickly and ensure the hard work we have done to put ourselves in a good league position does not alter by this one bad result. We will turn all our attention to preparing for a tough Gardner Webb team and going after max points on the road."
