BLOCKING FUELS RADFORD TO 3-0 WIN OVER WINTHROP

RADFORD, Va. – Behind 10 team blocks, the Radford volleyball team held Winthrop to .150 on the attack in its 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) sweep Friday night inside the Dedmon Center. With the win, the Highlanders (16-7, 6-2 Big South) are now only tied with Coastal Carolina for second place in the league standings.

Blocking had been a point of emphasis during practice this week and it was on display tonight. Led by Emma Deininger's six blocks (four assists, two solo), Radford executed at the net much more effectively. It was only fitting for Deininger to rack up some blocks as the senior middle blocker was honored prior to tonight's match for breaking the rally-scoring blocks record earlier this season.

In addition to Deininger's performance, Savannah Cantrell, Jena Braden, Rachel Wiechecki, Cheyanne James and Megan Short all recorded at least one rejection in the three-set affair. RU finished with 35 digs to complement its blocking. Kelby Jackson anchored the back row with 12 digs.

Wiechecki continued her double-double streak on the strength of 12 kills and 10 digs. It was her fifth-straight double-double, giving her 16 for the season. James torched the Eagles (15-9, 5-3 Big South) for a .571 hitting percentage with nine kills on 14 swings. Braden engineered the offense, which attacked at a .283 clip, with her 35 assists. Radford also dialed up five aces, which included two from Wiechecki.

Rachel Lenz's eight kills led a balanced Winthrop offense. Three other Eagles tallied at least six kills on the night. Jessie Vicic and Kelly Scott split time at the setter position, passing out 20 and 15 assists, respectively. On defense, Maria Volstad ended the contest with 12 digs, while Lenz contributed five blocks.

Radford will be back in action Saturday inside the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders welcome Presbyterian College for a Big South clash at 4 p.m.
