BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Radford (10-3-2, 7-0-0) posted a school record with its seventh win to open a Big South season Saturday with a heart-stopping 2-1 victory at Gardner-Webb (2-11-1, 0-5-1) with the game-winning goal coming from Dario Redondo in the 86th minute. The victory betters the 6-0-1 start in conference play by the 2012 Highlander squad and sets up a showdown next Saturday at Cupp Stadium vs. Coastal Carolina.
Redondo's game-winner was his fourth score of the season and came on an assist from another senior, Stephen Hudgens. The Radford tally came just two minutes after it appeared Gardner-Webb had taken the lead, but the Runnin' Bulldogs were ruled offside on the play, and RU responded to take the lead for good.
"As expected, this was an exceptionally tough game against a strong and talented GWU team," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "We created some decent goal scoring opportunities, but believe we needed to have more quality in our attacks and often better team decisions in key moments."
Radford dominated the day statistically. The Highlanders outshot GWU 21-6 and put seven shots on frame to just one for the hosts. Felix Steinhauser's header gave RU an early lead in the fifth minute. The serve was put in the box by Fraser Colmer, who notched his sixth assist on the season, which ties him for the lead in the Big South. The goal was the first of Steinhauser's career.
"Games like today, the result is all that matters," Reeves said. "We hung in there to find a way to get all three points."
The win over Gardner-Webb was the fifth straight in the series for Radford. The Highlanders have defeated the Bulldogs in the opening round of the Big South Tournament in each of the last two seasons, including an overtime win in the quarterfinals last year in Boiling Springs.
Entering Saturday, along with Radford, the Big South boasts two other undefeated teams - Coastal Carolina (5-0-0) and Winthrop (4-0-1). The Highlanders will play host to both of those teams in the final two games of the regular season. The Chanticleers visit Cupp Stadium on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. start. The Eagles come into Radford on Wednesday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m.
"We need a great week of preparation and training to get ready for a high-level Coastal team," Reeves concluded.
