CROSS COUNTRY TURNS ATTENTION TO BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's and women's cross country teams will head to Boiling Springs, N.C. on Saturday, Nov. 1 for the 2014 Big South Cross Country Championships. For the first time in championship history, the meet will be hosted by Gardner-Webb at its on-campus course.

On the women's side, the Highlanders will look to senior Teresa Williamson and redshirt senior Katie Hickey to lead the way. Hickey was just recently awarded Big South Runner of the Week after taking first place in the Cross Country Only National Invitational. The win also helped Radford take first place overall as four of its runners finished in the top-six.

Freshman Brady Guertin and junior Chaz Porter will set the pace for the men's team after coming off a strong showing in the Cross Country Only National Invitational in which the Highlanders took fourth. Guertin led the team with his season-best 25:56 and Porter finished with a PR time of 26:10, allowing both to finish in the top-15 at ninth and 13^th, respectively.

Among the frontrunners in the women's individual race is Coastal Carolina junior Letitia Saayman, who will attempt to become the sixth women's runner in BSC history to take home back-to-back individual titles. Coastal Carolina will also take a shot at becoming the first women's team to claim back-to-back titles since Liberty did so in 2009 and 2010.

Liberty and High Point have combined to win 12-straight Big South men's cross country championships, with the Flames capturing the last nine.

Competition begins with the women's 5K race at 10:30 a.m. The men's 8K race follows closely behind with an 11:30 a.m. start. Weather conditions could play a factor Saturday as the high for Boiling Springs is expected to be around 50 degrees, with winds gusting above 20 mph. There is also a chance of rain in the morning.
