RADFORD DEFENSE STIFLES LIBERTY FOR 2-0 SHUTOUT VICTORY

|

RADFORD, Va. - Radford (6-2-2, 3-0-0) and the Big South's best defensive line allowed just two Liberty (5-3-1, 0-2-0) shots and none on goal in producing its fifth shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory Saturday night at Cupp Stadium. The Highlanders got goals from Dario Redondo and Jamie Summers and earned their fourth straight victory and pushed the league's longest unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2).

RU took the lead for good in the eighth minute on the first goal of the season for Redondo. He took a pass at the top of the 18 box from Neil Martorana and drilled a shot to the top left corner of the goal past Liberty goalkeeper, Scott Sutarik. The assist on the play was the third of the season for Martorana and tied him for the team lead with Chel Ho Park Kim and Fraser Colmer.

The goal was the only help the defense would need. Liberty didn't get its first shot of the night until  the 73rd minute on a direct kick set piece that went wide of the goal. The only other Flame attempt was blocked by an RU defender, and Aitor Pouseu Blanco easily recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season, which leads the Big South.

"We defended pretty well against a talented Liberty team," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "We really limited them to only a couple chances. The midfield played exceptionally well, and we scored two phenomenal goals tonight."

The second Radford goal came when Summers forced a turnover deep in the Liberty half and unleashed a laser that beat Sutarik and gave RU an insurance tally in the 59th minute.

"This was a pleasing performance because I think they are a very good team," Reeves said. "Three points at home is what we want."

Radford continues Big South play Wednesday at Longwood.
