
HIGHLANDERS FIRE 304 IN OPENING ROUND OF WENDY’S KIAWAH CLASSIC

ROUND 1
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Radford men's golf team shot a 304 and is tied for 12th following Sunday's first round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic hosted by Charleston Southern at Turtle Point Golf Course (par 72, 7,061 yards).
Tanner Carbaugh led the Highlanders with his 1-over-par 73, which is tied for 14th. He recorded four birdies in his opening round, including two in his final three holes. The senior birdied two of the four par 3s to tie for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring at 2-under-par.
One stroke behind is Conner Hayden, who birdied the par-4 12th and the par-5 13th en route to a 2-over-par 74. He is tied for 25th with two rounds to go.
Despite struggling on the front nine, Nick Brediger rebounded with an incredible finish, which included three birdies and an eagle in his final six holes. The sophomore holed out on the par-4 17th, then birdied the par-4 18th to post a 78. With that score, Brediger is tied for 56th.
Like Brediger, Callum Cochrane also got off to a slow start, making the turn in 7-over-par. However, the freshman closed strong with a pair of birdies on the back nine to sign for a 79, which is tied for 71st. Ryan Rettberg fired an 80 in his opening round and is tied for 78th.
Winthrop signed for an even-par 288 to edge Missouri's 289 for the first-round lead. GRU Augusta (290) is third, followed by Jacksonville State (295), Richmond (295), Presbyterian (298), Marquette (301), Georgia Southern (301), USC Upstate (301) and Gardner-Webb (302). Charleston Southern is 11th at 303, one stroke clear of the Highlanders and Coastal Carolina.
Jake Marriott of GRU Augusta charted eight birdies on his way to a 6-under-par 66 to snatch the individual lead. Winthrop's Zach Seabolt lurks three stokes behind at 3-under-par 69.
The second round features an all-Big South pairing as Radford, Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern are scheduled to play together. Tee times for this group begin at 8:49 a.m. off the 10th tee.
