RADFORD'S SEASON ENDS WITH TOURNAMENT LOSS AT LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Radford's women's soccer season ended Sunday with a quarterfinal loss to Liberty in the Big South Tournament. The top-seeded Flames posted a 2-0 victory over the Highlanders at Osborne Stadium.

Battling into a stiff wind for the first half, the Highlander defense hung tough throughout much of the first 45 before Liberty scored the game's first goal in the 37th minute. Brittany Aanderud collected a cross from Crystal Elmers and a service assist from Jennifer Knoebel and beat RU's Katie McCormick to the right corner of the goal.

Early on, Radford had the first scoring opportunity of the match. Less than six minutes into the game, Jordan Lundin found herself on a breakaway and tried to beat LU keeper, Holly Van Noord, to the lower right post. Van Noord turned the shot away to keep the game scoreless. Liberty recorded 11 shots in the first half, but only three were on frame, and McCormick turned away two of them.

With the wind in the second half, the Radford offense picked up its pace and nearly found the equalizer in the 54th. Kara Wade found position just outside the six-yard box and was able to make a turn and fire a shot on goal. Van Noord again was up to the task however, turning away RU's best offensive chance of the day. Twelve minutes later, the Flames added an insurance goal by Madison Kauzlarich.

RU head coach Ben Sohrabi said he was proud of the Highlanders. "I thought we played solid defense in the first half, and even giving up the goal, we played them even in the second half. We had the two of the three best chances of the second half, but they converted theirs, and we didn't. All-in-all, I am proud of my team's effort. We will learn from this and grow."

Radford (7-10-2) ends its season with the loss and the careers of seven Highlanders seniors - Caitlin Annear, Annabel Bergin, Stephanie Herb, Caitlin Kick, Jasmine Sampson, Melissa Vogel, and Wade.
