AVERY LIGHTS UP DEDMON IN OVERTIME TO PROPEL RADFORD PAST NORFOLK STATE

RADFORD, Va. – Senior guard Ayana Avery scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in overtime to fuel the Radford women's basketball team to a 74-65 victory over Norfolk State Thursday night in nonconference action inside the Dedmon Center.

After barely missing the game-winning 3-pointer at the end of regulation, Avery set off the fire alarm by torching the nets in the five-minute overtime session. She did not miss a shot in the extra time, going 3-for-3 with two treys. In addition, the Cleveland, N.C., native was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, which is a career-best performance.

"This was a great win for our team," head coach Mike McGuire expressed. "I'm proud of the way we continued to compete to come back and win this game against an athletic Norfolk State team. This young team showed a lot of maturity at the end of the game, especially in overtime."

After sustaining a 31-30 edge at intermission, Radford saw the Spartans (0-3) score the first nine points of the second stanza to gain a 39-31 lead just over four minutes into the frame. However, that would be as large of a lead NSU could manage against the Highlanders.

Norfolk State remained in the lead for the next 10 minutes until back-to-back 3-pointers by Aisha Foy and Claudia Quevedo finally pushed RU back on top, 48-47, with 5:27 remaining in regulation. The score was tied on five different occasions over the closing minutes, with the last being at 57-all.

In overtime, Radford (1-1) was nearly flawless as the team shot 60 percent (3-5) from the floor and 90 percent (9-10) from the charity stripe to earn its first home overtime win since Jan. 10, 2011.

Gaby Gilmore and Foy joined Avery in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Gilmore also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. She was one of four Highlanders to record at least seven caroms in the game.

For the second-straight outing, Radford received substantial production from its bench. The Highlanders outscored NSU, 30-14, in bench scoring. On the season, RU has a 57-34 advantage in that category. Radford also accumulated 17 assists and six blocks.

Kayla Roberts dialed up a team-high 20 points for the Spartans. Rae Corbo, who entered the game averaging 23.5 points per game, contributed 18 points. She was 8-for-9 from the free throw line. As a team, NSU was 23-for-29 (79.3 percent) from the charity stripe.

RU will be back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Highlanders battle Youngstown State out of the Horizon League for the first time in program history inside the Dedmon Center.
