RADFORD BURIES CATAWBA BY 36, EVENS RECORD AT 2-2

|

RADFORD, Va. - Radford opened Sunday's game against Catawba (2-3) on a 7-0 run and never trailed, cruising to an 88-52 win in the initial game of the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic. The Highlanders (2-2) won for the second straight game at home and will now hit the road for the final three games of the classic over the Thanksgiving holiday. Javonte Green led RU with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Three Highlanders reached double figures and 11 of the 12 players that got into the game scored for RU. Rashun Davis finished with 13 points, four assists, and a career high four steals. R.J. Price added 11 points. The defense held the Indians to 33 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers with 11 steals. RU owned the pace of the game with a 15-2 edge in fastbreak points and a 15-3 advantage in points off turnovers.

"We were locked in defensively from the start," Radford head coach Mike Jones said. "The second half we really were able to get the ball deep into the post and that's why we were able to shoot such a good percentage."

Radford entered the game having shot just 35 percent from the field over the first three games of the season, but broke from that slump hitting 48 percent on Sunday and 61 percent in the second half with a total of eight connections from behind the three-point line. The Highlanders continued their early season dominance on the glass outrebounding Catawba 43-35 with 13 offensive caroms. Brandon Holcomb added six points and six rebounds, and Cameron Jones scored career highs with eight points and five rebounds.

Jameel Taylor led the Indians with 11 points. Jerrin Morrison grabbed a team high eight rebounds.

"It was good to be in a game where we could get some of our bench guys a lot of minutes," Jones said. "We needed a game to build some confidence and tonight we were able to do that."

RU plays at Texas Christian on Wednesday in Fort Worth, Texas before heading to Corpus Christi for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday to complete its play in the Coastal Classic.
