Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

GAYMON’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE NOT ENOUGH IN ROAD LOSS TO PITT

PITTSBURGH – Making her first start of the season, Jordynn Gaymon dropped in 10 points and 10 rebounds, but her effort was not enough as Pittsburgh claimed a 72-47 nonconference women's basketball win over Radford Wednesday afternoon inside the Petersen Events Center.

"Pitt played really well," head coach Mike McGuire said. "I was pleased with the way we started, but then we somehow hit a drought, offensively."

That drought began at the 6:27 mark of the first half after freshman Jayda Worthy converted a layup to bring the Highlanders (1-3) within 18-17. Pitt (3-2) held Radford scoreless for the remainder of the half and the opening 3:25 of the second stanza. During this span, the Panthers widened their one-point advantage to 15 (32-17) before Gaymon capitalized on a Brittany Allen assist at the 16:35 mark of the second half.

"Pitt did a great job of extending their pressure and that rattled us a little bit," McGuire continued. "We have to learn how to handle adversity better. When the shots aren't falling, it's affecting our intensity and energy on defense. Our execution is a work in progress. We are going to figure this out. We are going to figure out how to get better and get this team on track."

The main bright spot for RU was Gaymon's performance. The 6-foot-1 forward notched her second double-double of her career behind season highs in points and rebounds.

"Jordynn did a good job tonight," McGuire pointed out. "We started Jordynn because of [Pitt's] post players and the strengths of those post players. Both of Pitt's post players are more perimeter oriented and can stretch the defense. Jordynn responded. She was solid. Jordynn had two good practices coming into this game. She earned the start and produced for us."

The Highlanders also did something no other Pitt opponent has been able to do: hold senior guard Brianna Kiesel to single-digit scoring. The New York native entered the game averaging 17.8 points per game for Pitt. She finished with five points, with three of those coming at the free throw line.

However, Monica Wignot and Fred Potvin picked up the slack for the Panthers as they poured in 20 and 15 points, respectively. Pitt finished at 43.1 percent shooting, including 47.4 percent from 3-point land. The Panthers were able to gain a 36-22 advantage in points in the paint and a 26-11 favor in points off turnovers.

Radford continues its road swing Sunday in Boone, N.C., against Appalachian State. Tipoff between the Highlanders and the Mountaineers is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside the Holmes Center.
