LATE RALLY LIFTS WEST VIRGINIA STATE OVER RADFORD

RADFORD, Va. – On the strength of a 10-0 run to close the game, West Virginia State defeated Radford, 58-52, Thursday night in nonconference women's basketball action inside the Dedmon Center.

A 3-pointer by Ayana Avery pushed the Highlanders (3-7) ahead, 52-48, with 4:12 remaining in the game. Unfortunately for Radford, her triple was the team's final points of the contest.

While the Highlanders went cold from the floor, West Virginia State (2-5) heated up from the free throw line. Of the Yellow Jackets' final 10 points, eight came from the charity stripe.

For the game, WVSU finished 13-for-16 from the free throw line, including an 11-for-14 effort in the second stanza. Meanwhile, Radford attempted only eight free throws for the entire 40 minutes — making two of them.

Three Highlanders finished in double-figure scoring, led by Avery and Jordynn Gaymon with 12 points apiece. Aisha Foy went 4-for-9 from the floor en route to 10 points. Kiera McIvor accounted for five of Radford's 13 assists.

Alexus Hobbs (13 points/10 rebounds) and Shealyn Shafer (12 points/11 rebounds) posted double-doubles for West Virginia State. The duo was a combined 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Deyahnna Styles, who was the Yellow Jackets' leading scorer entering the game, finished with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

Before leaving for Christmas, the Highlanders will make the short trip to Blacksburg to clash with Virginia Tech. The two sides will meet for the 33rd time Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Cassell Coliseum.
