WINTHROP HOLDS OFF MEN’S TENNIS, 4-2

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford men's tennis team staged a late comeback Sunday afternoon before Winthrop clinched the dual at No. 6 singles to earn a 4-2 triumph in Big South action at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Tech.

Led by Nicholas Sayer and Joe Mills, who both went 2-0 on the day, the Highlanders (2-10, 2-3 Big South) erased a 2-0 deficit to tie the match with three decisions hanging in the balance.

Radford got on the board when Sayer claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Yuta Hirokawa at No. 1 singles to improve to 7-4 in the dual season. Next to finish was Mills, who battled back after trailing in the second set to secure the 6-0, 6-4 win at the fourth position. Mills also moves to 7-4 in dual competition.

Tied at 2, Winthrop (10-7, 3-0 Big South) received a 6-2, 6-3 triumph from Juan Pablo Boada at No. 5 singles to regain the lead. The Eagles' Michael Chen clinched the decision when he defeated Janken Thoen (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) on court six.

Sayer and Mills combined for the Highlanders' only win in doubles action, outlasting Steven Patrick and Tremayne Mitchell, 8-7 (11-9).

RU continues Big South play next Saturday against UNC Asheville. First serve is set for noon at the Radford University Tennis Complex.
