
SOFTBALL'S WINNING STREAK SNAPPED AT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Radford was held to two hits and had its eight-game winning streak snapped at Charleston Southern, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon at CSU Softball Field. Despite the defeat, the Highlanders still won the Big South series, 2-1.
CSU pitcher Jennifer Giles allowed a pair of singles, struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
Charleston Southern (20-28-1, 6-10 Big South) pushed across an unearned run in the third as a hit by pitch, single and bunt single with throwing error, all with two out, put the Bucs up 1-0. They added another two-out run in the fourth on a RBI infield single by Georgi Delio.
The Highlanders (17-20, 11-4) had an opportunity to get on the board in the top of the fourth as the first two runners reached. They would eventually be stranded at second and third as the next three batters were retired.
The Buccaneers closed out the game with a six-run fifth, scoring five unearned run courtesy of two Radford errors.
In all, Radford pitchers allowed just two earned runs and did not walk a batter. Sophomore Rachael Walters took the loss in three-plus innings of work. She surrendered two runs, one earned on four hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Abby Morrow allowed one earned run on seven hits in 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
Sophomore Nia Chiles and junior Mackenzie Blackwell each recorded a hit for the Highlanders. Senior Jessie Hutchens, who was hit in her second at bat, has reached base safely in 22 straight contests and 35 of 37 this season.
Radford returns home for a non-conference doubleheader against Appalachian State on Thursday, April 17. First game slated for 4:00 p.m.
