MEN’S GOLF PAINTS THE COUNTRY CLUB OF SPARTANBURG RED ON FIRST DAY

ROUNDS 1-2  |  LIVE SCORING

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Five of Radford's six men's golfers are in red figures following Monday's 36 holes of the Coca-Cola Invitational hosted by Wofford at The Country Club of Spartanburg.

Due to its shortness in length, the par 72, 6,648-yard layout yielded an abundance of low numbers on the day. In fact, 33 of the 83 golfers entered in the field are below par. John Somers of Elon has set the pace at 11-under-par 133 (65-68), which is a 36-hole tournament record. Giving chase is teammate Troy Beaver, who is three shots behind at 8-under-par 136 (69-67).

With the top two golfers in the field, Elon unloaded a 30-under-par (546), which shattered the tournament's 36-hole team record. The Phoenix possess an 11-shot advantage over second-place Lamar, which ended the day at 19-under-par 557 (273-284).

Wofford is third at 558 (277-281), followed by Gardner-Webb and No. 50 TCU (565). In sixth are the Highlanders, who entered as one of three Top-100 teams competing in the event. Radford delivered an 8-under-par 280 in the morning's first round, and then manufactured an even-par 288 in the afternoon to conclude the day at 8-under-par 568.

Longwood and Appalachian State (570), No. 82 USC Upstate (577) and Francis Marion (579) round out the Top 10.

Pacing the Radford contingent is Conner Hayden, who sits at 3-under-par 141 (72-69). At even-par through 18 holes, the sophomore turned his game up a notch in the afternoon. Starting on hole No. 5, Hayden finished his final four holes at 2-under-par thanks to an eagle at the par-5 first.

Tied for 25th at 2-under-par 142 are Ryan Rettberg and Nick Brediger. After cruising to a blemish-free 4-under-par 68 in his first round, Rettberg battled wet and windy conditions during his final 18 holes en route to a 2-over-par 74.

As he has most of the season, Brediger played nothing like a freshman on his way to back-to-back 71s. The Roanoke, Va. native racked up a team-best 11 birdies Monday.

Callum Tarren is tied for 29th at 1-under-par 143 (69-74). His morning round featured an impressive seven birdies, including four in an eight-hole stretch. Tanner Carbaugh is tied for 44th at 2-over-par 146 (74-72). The junior charted an afternoon-best six birdies for the Highlanders.

Competing as an individual, Conner Lewis showed promise for the future as he is tied for 29th at 1-under-par 143 (68-75). One week after competing in match play (his first action as a Highlander), the redshirt freshman showed tremendous potential during his opening 18 holes. After opening with a bogey, Lewis rattled off six birdies over the remainder of his round to open his stroke play career with a bang.

Tuesday's final round gets underway with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. RU is paired with TCU and Gardner-Webb, and will begin play on holes four-seven.
