SAYER, O’KEEFE HAUL IN POSTSEASON HONORS FOR MEN’S TENNIS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Nicholas Sayer and Patrick O'Keefe of Radford have earned men's tennis postseason awards from the Big South as announced by the league office Tuesday.

"I am proud of these fine young men," head coach Mike Anderson said. "Nick is going to leave Radford as one of the all-time greats to ever play for our program, and Patrick is following right in his footsteps. These two have represented our program and university with such class. They are very deserving of this recognition."

In addition to being the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Sayer earned all-conference recognition at No. 1 singles. The three-time All-Big South singles player went 5-3 against conference competition at the top flight en route to being a two-time Big South player of the week this season.

He posted a 2-1 record against nationally-ranked opponents, defeating No. 38 Cameron Silverman (Elon) and No. 75 Philippe Tsangaridis (Coastal Carolina) in straight sets. At 88 career singles victories, Sayer will finish with the third-highest win total in program history.

Sayer became Radford's third men's tennis player to be named scholar-athlete of the year, joining Mehdi Benhammou (2009) and Igor Ogrizek (2010). A graduate student in the university's College of Business and Economics, Sayer has a 4.0 while working toward his MBA. He received five first-place votes and 73 points to claim the accolade.

Joining Sayer on the all-conference team was O'Keefe, who went 6-1 at the No. 2 singles position for the Highlanders in Big South play. Based on that record, O'Keefe was also named the flight champion for the second spot. The junior carries a five-match singles winning streak into the conference championship, which begins Thursday at 8 a.m. for RU.

The Highlanders, seeded fifth in the tournament for the second-straight year, will take on No. 4 seed Campbell in that quarterfinal match at the Webb Tennis Complex in Boiling Springs, N.C. Radford will be looking to avenge a 4-3 setback to the Camels at home on March 20.
