ROUND 3  |  PHOTO GALLERY

NINETY SIX, S.C. –
Radford fired its best 54-hole ledger at a conference championship as the Highlanders garnered fourth place following Wednesday's final round of the 2014 Big South Men's Golf Championship at The Patriot Golf Club (par 72, 7,120 yards).

The Highlanders carded rounds of 292, 303 and 292 to tally an 887, which is four shots better than their 891 shot in 2008 when RU took third. 35th-ranked Liberty won its third Big South championship in four years by charting an 867 (290-293-284).

Despite joining the Flames in red figures Wednesday, Charleston Southern was unable to catch the top seed. The Buccaneers finished at 872 (286-303-283), five behind Liberty.

Coastal Carolina claimed third with its 878 (285-303-290), which was nine swings clear of the Highlanders. Campbell rounded out the Top 5 at 894 (296-306-292).

Leading the way was Tanner Carbaugh, who finished one stroke away from tying the 54-hole championship individual record (Aaron Summers – 215) for Radford with an even-par 216 (70-74-72).

His final round was highlighted by birdies at the second, seventh, eighth and 10th holes for a 4-under start to his day. Based on finishing fifth, the junior earned a spot on the all-tournament team. It was his second Top 5 of the season. Carbaugh played the par-4s in 2-under-par, which tied for the best in the field.

Posting the best final round for Radford was Conner Hayden, who signed for a 2-under-par 70. Entering the round tied for 19th, the junior notched his third Top 10 of the season by day's end, climbing into a tie for ninth at 5-over-par 221 (74-77-70).

Ryan Rettberg tied for 18th at 224 (74-75-75). He played his final six holes in 1-under-par to record his sixth Top 20 of the season. The junior tied for second in the field in par-3 scoring at 1-under-par.

Playing his final collegiate tournament, Callum Tarren tied for 23rd at 226 (74-77-75). It was a storybook finish for the senior, who capped his final 18 in the Red and White with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 17 and 18. Tarren led the field in par-5 scoring, playing those holes in 8-under-par.

In his first appearance at the conference championship, Nick Brediger compiled a 233 (75-77-81) en route to tying for 35th.

Ben Wheeler of Coastal Carolina captured the individual title on the strength of a 3-under-par 69 in his final round. He finished at 5-under-par 211 (70-72-69) to edge Charleston Southern's David Denlinger and Campbell's Gaston Bertinotti by three shots.

At the conclusion of today's final round, Carbaugh was named to the all-conference, all-tournament and all-academic teams.

For the second straight year, Radford was represented on the all-freshman team as Brediger secured a spot on the five-golfer squad.

Meanwhile, head coach Mike Grant was honored as the Big South coach of the year for the second time in his career. He also earned the accolade in 2008 when the Highlanders placed third, their best finish at the conference championship.
