Radford Softball heads over to Blacksburg for its final non-conference game of the regular season, taking on Virginia Tech on May 1 in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m. This is a change for the originally scheduled twinbill on Wedneday.
The Highlanders (22-23) have won eight of their last 12 after taking two of three from Gardner-Webb in their final home series of the season. Radford is currently sitting in third place, a game behind Longwood going into the final Big South weekend. A win over Longwood or a loss by Campbell secures a second or third-place finish, while a series (May 4-5 in Farmville) victory over the Lancers would earn them the second seed.
Jessie Hutchens continues her monstrous senior season, batting .375 with 17 home runs, 48 RBI, 35 runs and a .813 slugging percentage. Sophomore
Whitney Davis is coming in at a .308 clip with nine home runs, 26 RBI and 20 runs scored. Freshman
Abby Morrow (9-5, 2.86) and sophomore
Rachael Walters (11-11, 2.87) have seen the majority of innings in the circle, recording 106 and 113 striekouts respectively. Morrow has walked just 16 batters in 120 innings (7th in NCAA), while Walters has held her opponents to a .236 average in 124.1 innings of work.
The Hokies (32-20) are playing their final regular season games on Thursday and hold down the second seed in the ACC and can finish no lower than third. Tech is batting .284 as a team with five players batting above .300. Vanessa Gonzalez tops the group with a .350 average, 12 double, seven home runs, 29 RBI and 34 runs scored. Joining her in the .300 club are Kylie McGoldrick (.342, 12 2B, 8 HR, 40 R), Katey Smith (.315, 11 2B, 8 HR, 41 RBI), Laren Gaskill (.314, 11 2B, 6 HR, 36 R) and Logan Spaw (.307, 16 RBI). Amanda Ake leads the Hokies with 10 long balls. The duo of Maggie Tyler (14-8, 3.14, 153 K) and Kelly Heinz (18-12, 3.47, 152 K) have pitched all but 6.1 innings and posted five and four shutouts, respectively.
Radford closes out its regular season on May 4-5 at Longwood in a series with Big South tournament seeding implications. The squads play a doubleheader on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and wraps up the regular season at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
