MEN’S GOLF GOES 1-1 AT LIBERTY MATCH PLAY INVITATIONAL

RESULTS

AMHERST, Va. –
Radford men's golf bounced back from Saturday morning's defeat to James Madison with an afternoon victory over George Mason at the Liberty Match Play Invitational hosted by the Flames at the par 72, 7,059-yard Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst, Va.

JMU defeated the Highlanders, 4.5-1.5, during the morning's semifinals. Tanner Carbaugh recorded the lone point by downing Trey Smith, 5-and-4. Carbaugh won four of the first six holes in his match and never looked back en route to the resounding triumph. Callum Tarren halved his match with the Dukes' Ryan Cole to provide the final scoring for RU.

Meeting JMU in the championship match was Liberty, which claimed a 5-1 win over George Mason in the morning's other semifinal.

In the afternoon consolation match, the Highlanders rebounded with a decisive 5.5-0.5 victory over George Mason. Conner Hayden breezed through Mark Folkwein, 4-and-3, to give Radford the early lead. Riding the momentum from his morning session, Carbaugh dispatched Kevin Yerks, 3-and-2.

Ryan Rettberg increased the Highlanders' advantage to 3-0 when he registered a 3-and-2 win over Kyle Hart. Nick Brediger and Ben O'Geary captured a pair of 1-up victories to clinch the match for Radford. Like his morning battle, Tarren contributed 0.5 of a point by halving with Zack Lauzon.

Competing as an individual, Conner Lewis went 1-0-1 in his two matches. He defeated Liberty's Harrison Winger, 2-up, in the morning action. Against the Dukes' Trey Smith in the afternoon, Lewis established a 2-up lead late in the round, but could not hold on as he salvaged a halve.

The Flames beat JMU in the championship final, 4-2.

Radford travels to Spartanburg, S.C. for its final tuneup prior to the conference championship. The Highlanders tee it up April 14-15 at the Coca-Cola Invitational, which will be hosted by Wofford at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
