SIX HIGHLANDERS AMONG BIG SOUTH BASEBALL ALL-DECADES TEAMS

BIG SOUTH RELEASE  |  Radford placed six former baseball standouts on the Big South Conference all-decades teams, announced Thursday by the league office in celebration of the 30th year anniversary of the conference. Pitcher Phil Leftwich and catcher Travis Morgan were named to the 1980s team, while position players Duane Filchner, Denny Van Pelt, and Kelly Dampeer were among the 1990s players honored. Alex Gregory earned the accolade on the infield for the 2000s decade.

Phil LeftwichLeftwich (1988-90) is a Radford Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and a two-time All-Big South selection. He went on to pitch for the California Angels becoming Radford's first Major League player. He still ranks third on the Radford career list for pitching victories with 19 and second in career ERA at 3.24.




Travis MorganMorgan (1988-91) is a Radford Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and a two-time All-Big South selection. After being named all-conference as a freshman and sophomore, a back injury slowed his career. Still today, he ranks tied for seventh all-time at RU with 23 home runs and sixth with 139 career RBI.




Duane FilchnerFilchner (1992-95) is a Radford Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and a four-time All-Big South selection. He was RU's first Big South Player of the Year selection in 1994. He ranks second all-time in hits (269) and tops the RU career list in batting average (.389), RBI (181) and runs scored (198).




Denny Van PeltVan Pelt (1991-94) was a three-time All-Big South selction for the Highlanders. He ranks among the best power hitters in RU history with 25 home runs (6th), 45 doubles (tie-5th), 151 RBI (4th), and is the RU career leader in walks with 105.





Kelly DampeerDampeer (1994-97) earned All-Big South honors four times in his career. He is tied for the career record of 38 home runs and holds the mark for doubles (64) as a Highlander and ranks in several categories offensively among Radford players. He is third in hits (266), third in runs scored (160), and second in RBI (178).




GregoryGregory (2006-09) is a three-time All-Big South selection. He is tied for the career mark at RU in home runs (38) and holds the record for on-base percentage (.465). He owns the second highest batting average in school history (.377) and ranks third in RBI (166), fourth in runs scored (155), and tied for fifth in doubles (45).






Baseball All-Decade Team candidates were determined based on being at least one of the following: 1) Was a multiple All-Conference honoree at one or more position; 2) Was named an All-American; 3) Is a member of the Big South Conference Hall of Fame; 4) Student-athletes must have been a college graduate or left their respective institution in good academic standing; and 5) Won a Conference Championship as a coach and/or was voted Conference Coach of the Year; and 6) Every All-Conference honoree and Tournament MVP from 1986-89 was included in the candidate pool for the 1986-89 All-Decade Team.  Candidates that participated in two different decades were placed in a specific decade based on consultation from member institutions. Candidates were also listed under their primary position during their careers. Member institutions had final determination in regards to inclusion of student-athletes and coaches.
