HIGHLANDERS ROLL PAST PRESBYTERIAN, 6-1

|

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford (4-2-2, 1-0-0) men's soccer team opened Big South Conference play with an impressive 6-1 victory over Presbyterian (1-6-0, 0-1-0) at Cupp Stadium on Saturday evening. Kieran Roberts recorded his first career hat trick, and Chel Ho Park Kim moved into sixth place all-time at RU with his 16th career assist on Ryan Albiston's first career goal. The Highlanders won their second straight game and pushed their unbeaten streak to a league best six games (4-0-2).

9381Radford head coach Marc Reeves lauded his team's effort in the conference opener. "It was a professional performance where we maximized our strengths as a team," he said. "We had a lot of players play really well tonight, and we were a lot better on the attacking side of it which is something we have been working on."

Stephen Hudgens opened the scoring in the 19th minute off a cross from Fraser Colmer. The goal was the third of the season and fourth of his career. The first of Roberts' three tallies came in the 26th minute on an assist from Neil Martorana and served as his second straight game-winning goal for the Highlanders. The assist was the first career point for Martorana. Roberts added his second goal on a steal and put away on a lone breakaway in the 38th minute. An own goal made it 4-0 in the 64th, and Albiston found the net in the 64th to push the score to 5-0. Park Kim assisted on the Albiston goal.

Presbyterian got on the board taking advantage of a defensive handball inside the Radford goalie box and converted the penalty kick. Josh Carter scored his first goal of the season for the Blue Hose on the PK.

"We are disappointed we gave up the penalty kick and gave up the goal," Reeves said. "We always want to have a clean sheet, but a pleasing performance to get the three points in conference play."

The final goal of the night gave Roberts his hat trick. He headed a perfect serve from Albiston to make it 6-1 in the 85th. The helper was Albiston's first of his career.

Radford continues in Big South play Wednesday traveling to UNC Asheville for a 5:00 p.m. kick.
