DEININGER SETS BLOCKS RECORD IN 3-2 SETBACK AT EAST TENNESSEE STATE



JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Senior middle blocker Emma Deininger set the Radford volleyball rally-scoring blocks record Tuesday night, but the Highlanders were edged in the end (25-21, 19-25, 30-28, 23-25, 16-14) by East Tennessee State in nonconference action inside Brooks Gym.
 
Deininger entered the match only three blocks away from eclipsing Divona Cox's record of 378. The Wallingford, Pa., native crossed that mark late in the fourth set to take over the top spot with 379. In addition to her three blocks, Deininger put down nine kills on 17 swings (.412).
 
Fellow classmate Rachel Wiechecki notched her 10th double-double of the season (17 kills and 16 digs) to pace the Highlanders (10-6). Jena Braden also recorded a double-double, her seventh of the season, with a season-high 50 assists and 11 digs. Megan Short blasted a career-high 15 kills on 28 attempts (.429), while Maddie Palmer unleashed 10 winners.
 
Savanna Burton tallied 19 digs to guide Radford's defense. She was one of five Highlanders to finish with double-digit digs. RU finished with 85 digs as a team.
 
Bethany Gesell (19 kills), Ivey Rice (18) and Meredith Hardy (16) carried the load, offensively, for ETSU (6-11). Kristin Favre dished out 49 assists, while Katie Muey was all over the backline for the Bucs, digging 37 balls. ETSU was also strong at the net, charting 10.5 blocks.
 
Radford will look to return to the win column when the team concludes its road swing with a weekend in North Carolina. The Highlanders are set to face UNC Asheville (Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.) and Gardner-Webb (Oct. 4 at 5 p.m.).
