Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

STRONG START FUELS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO 78-60 VICTORY AT LONGWOOD

FARMVILLE, Va. – On the strength of a 23-4 run to open Saturday's Big South women's basketball game at Longwood, Radford was able to cruise to a 78-60 win over the Lancers inside Willett Hall.

Based on its fourth straight triumph, the Highlanders (7-8, 4-2 Big South) climbed into a tie for third place in the Big South standings with Winthrop and Campbell. Radford's four-game winning streak is its longest such streak since Jan. 2013 when the Highlanders won five in a row.

RU could not have scripted a much better start to Saturday's in-state clash. The Highlanders hit 10 of their first 18 shots to storm out to a 23-4 advantage nearly eight minutes into the contest.

"The start was great—I loved the energy, the execution and the mentality to attack," head coach Mike McGuire said about the opening of the game. "I thought our defensive effort in the first eight minutes was as sound as we have been all year. Our young ladies were locked in during that stretch."

Following Radford's hot start, the Lancers (2-14, 2-5 Big South) turned up their defensive intensity and were able to dwindle their deficit to 39-23 at the break.

"Sometimes when you have a young team, and you get out to a big lead like we did, it's easy for a team to relax," McGuire commented. "I think that's kind of what happened, and credit Longwood, they were able to capitalize a little bit."

Out of halftime, the Highlanders extended their lead to as much as 26 (58-32) before finishing with an 18-point win—their largest margin of victory this season.

Radford's offense was ignited by the superior play of Aisha Foy, Jayda Worthy and Janayla White. Foy tallied 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting to reach double-figure scoring for the seventh time this season. Worthy (16 points, 13 rebounds) and White (15 points, 11 rebounds) chalked up a pair of double-doubles for RU. Their performances marked the first time two Highlanders recorded double-doubles in the same game since Nov. 12, 2013 against Lynchburg College.

"Jayda and Janayla were phenomenal today," McGuire pointed out. "Aisha continues to get better. She is scoring, but she is also leading our team, taking better care of the basketball and developing into a really good point guard."

Worthy and White combined for 24 of Radford's 43 rebounds. The Highlanders won the battle of the boards, 43-26. Longwood became Radford's fifth opponent to be outrebounded by double digits this season.

RU, which played three games in six days this week, shot 49.2 percent from the floor while knocking down a season-high eight 3-pointers. Radford exploited LU's height disadvantage by outgaining the Lancers, 42-18, in points in the paint.

"This has been a great week for us," McGuire said. "To go 3-0 and two of those three be on the road, is a strong effort out of our young team. Our young ladies are continuing to work. This team wants to be good, it's just learning how to win, how to compete and push one another."

Kyndal Skersick paced three Lancers in double-digit scoring with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Micaela Ellis dropped in 11 points while Deborah Headen contributed 10 points.

Radford returns home for Tuesday's clash with defending Big South tournament champion Winthrop. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Dedmon Center.
