RADFORD RALLIES ON THE ROAD, WINS AT WINTHROP

|

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Radford (12-7, 3-3) overcame double-digit deficits in each half Saturday at Winthrop (8-9, 3-3) and rallied to post its third straight win in Big South play, 85-77, at the Winthrop Coliseum. R.J. Price paced five Highlanders in double figures with 20 points on 5-6 shooting from behind the three-point line. Jalen Carethers scored a season-high 14 off the bench.

It was a game of streaks and runs, the first coming from the Eagles. WU put together a 12-3 spurt midway through the first half to turn a 21-20 lead into a 10-point margin, 33-23, with 5:22 to play in the first half. The Highlanders answered by closing the final 5:22 on a 16-5 run of their own to take a 39-38 lead at halftime. Price's three-pointer with just under a minute to play gave RU the lead. YaYa Anderson scored six of his 13 points in that stretch as well and for the game tied a career high with six assists.

Winthrop shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half and trailed, in large part to Radford's efforts from behind the arc (5-8) and at the free throw line (8-8) in the first 20 minutes. RU shot 41.9 percent from the field in the first half.

The second half proved to be just as streaky.

After Radford stretched its lead to seven, 47-40, WU responded with a 14-0 run and eventually made it a 24-5 run to take a 12-point lead with 12:29 remaining.

"Our guys responded the right way to the adversity in both halves," Radford head coach Mike Jones said. "They responded by relying on each other and came out of here with a nice win."

The Radford response started with a pair of bench players. A Carethers dunk and Cameron Jones jumper started a 12-0 stretch to tie the game by the 7:52 mark. And yet the comebacks were not done. After the Eagle scored the next five points, the final rally of the day started with a Jones three-pointer that led to a 15-4 spurt that put the Highlanders in control throughout the remainder of the game. Jones finished with 13 points on the day.

A Price three-pointer with 4:10 left gave Radford the lead for good, 76-73. Javonte Green, who did not score in the first half, scored five of his 13 for the game in the final 3:10 to help ice the game for RU.

"I'm just proud of my guys for sticking with it," Jones said. "We showed incredible mental toughness today in grinding out a win."

Both teams shot the ball well. RU shot 51.8 from the floor for the game, and Winthrop 54.4. Radford won the game at the line, 16-18, and from deep, 11-18. The Highlanders won the battle on the glass, 30-26, led by Green's eight caroms.

Winthrop was led by Keon Johnson's 21 points. Keon Moore chipped in with 14.

Radford returns to the Dedmon Center on Thursday for a showdown with rival High Point. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
