QUEVEDO GUIDES RADFORD TO 67-65 ROAD VICTORY OVER UNC ASHEVILLE

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – On a night where two of the top three teams in the Big South women's basketball standings fell on the road, Radford was able to avoid the upset bug and hold on for a 67-65 triumph over UNC Asheville Tuesday night inside Kimmel Arena.

Freshman guard Claudia Quevedo had a great deal to do with the outcome. The Canary Islands, Spain, native erupted for a season-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She showed no signs of nerves down the stretch, hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:14 remaining to give the Highlanders (9-9, 6-3 Big South) a 65-63 advantage.

The Bulldogs (4-14, 3-6 Big South) answered with a layup on the other end to tie the score at 65 with 41 seconds showing on the clock. Facing a tie game late in regulation for the second straight contest, RU was able to close out the win this time. Junior guard Aisha Foy drove down the lane and found a wide-open Janayla White, who netted the game-winner for the Highlanders with 18 seconds to go.

With time to score, Asheville attacked the teeth of Radford's defense, but White was there to register one of her two blocks of the game to preserve the victory.

"This was another tough game for us," head coach Mike McGuire expressed. "I want to credit UNC Asheville. They had tremendous effort and are a much better team than what their record shows. For us, this game wasn't really smooth. Our post players got into foul trouble in the first half. Although our execution wasn't where I would like it to be, we made enough plays down the stretch to secure this important road win."

Like Coach McGuire said, the Highlanders' post players were in foul trouble for a large portion of the game. Their presence was missed in the rebounding department as Radford only pulled down 32 boards, including just three on the offensive end.

"This is something that cannot continue," McGuire stated. "We talked about this as a team coming into the game. If we want to grow as a basketball team, we must be more disciplined on defense and get back to the rebounding team we were a couple weeks ago."

With the post players in foul trouble, the guards stole the show. In addition to Quevedo's season-high point total, Gaby Gilmore and Foy dropped in 10 points apiece. Foy accounted for six of Radford's 14 assists. As a team, RU shot a season-high 52 percent (26-50).

"Our guards stepped up tonight when they needed to," McGuire pointed out. "I am especially proud of Claudia and the way she performed all game. She wasn't just good tonight, she was phenomenal."

Radford held the Bulldogs to 35.6 percent shooting. Asheville became the seventh straight opponent to shoot below 40 percent against the Highlanders.

Shonese Jones dialed up 18 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Bulldogs in the scoring column. Tianna Knuckles added 12 points off the bench.

Radford, which climbed into a tie for third place in the conference standings with Campbell after tonight, returns to the Dedmon Center for Saturday's Big South doubleheader. Defending Big South regular-season champion High Point will collide with the RU women at 2 p.m. The 4:30 p.m. men's game features an in-state battle between Radford and Liberty. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
