RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in their most important meet of the season as the Big South Championships are held Saturday morning in Spartanburg, S.C.
Â
The men's 8K race will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the women's 5K to follow at 11:30 a.m.
Â
After having its first month of the season disrupted by weather, the Highlander men's squad has competed two of the last three weeks to prepare itself as it hopes to improve on last year's fourth-place finish. Sophomore Jacob Black has led the way throughout the fall while twice clocking personal bests. Seniors Ryan Farnan, Chaz Porter and Harrison Murn will look for strong finishes in their final conference meet and sophomore Brady Guertin posted a season-best time in his most recent race.
Â
On the women's side, juniors Courtney Burton and Courtney Rice have led the way. Burton has set two personal-best 6K times, while Rice was the top finisher in the only 5K of the season. Sophomore Cailynn Lavigne has also run personal bests 6Ks twice, freshman Sarah Riley has been among RU's top three in each of the last three meets and freshman Audra Yarber was the leader in the season opener and fourth two weeks ago in her only other race.
Â
Along with several other teams, Radford did not compete in the conference's preview meet in September due to muddy conditions. The Highlanders did hold a workout on the course the day prior to that event and plan to do so again Friday evening.
Â
Defending champion High Point and Liberty are the favorites in both races, with the Highlanders likely battling Campbell and UNC Asheville for top-five positions.
