RADFORD TAKES DOWN GEORGETOWN IN DOUBLE OT THRILLER

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Radford 82, Georgetown 80 (2OT)
  • Records: Radford (1-0) | Georgetown (0-1)
  • Location: Verizon Center | Washington, D.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rashun Davis hit a pull-up 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left in double overtime to give the Radford men's basketball team a dramatic season-opening road victory at Georgetown, 82-80, Saturday afternoon inside the Verizon Center.
  • Davis' game-winning basket set a career high for the senior, as he finished with 28 points. His previous best was 25 against VMI as a sophomore.
  • The Highlanders withstood two comebacks by Georgetown that extended the game. RU led by five with under two minutes left in regulation and by three with 1:32 to go in the first overtime.
  • Radford then rallied itself in the second extra session by making its final four shots from the field. Trailing by three with just over two minutes to play, Cameron Jones hit a 3-pointer to tie it and another one on the next possession that put the Highlanders ahead, 79-78, with 1:22 left.
  • Georgetown's D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera put the Hoyas ahead on a layup with one minute to play, but they missed a 3-pointer on their next possession, giving RU the last chance.
  • Freshman Ed Polite, Jr. grabbed the rebound and got the ball to Davis up the left side. The Charlotte, N.C., native calmly pulled up three feet behind the arc in front of the Highlanders' bench and drained it.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Davis finished 12 of 19 from the floor, setting career-bests for field goals made and attempted. He was 6 for 6 from the field in the opening half, scoring 13 of his points, and finished the game 3 of 7 from behind the arc. He also dished out a team-high five assists.
  • Jones also came up huge, hitting the two late 3-pointers–part of a 4 for 6 performance–en route to 20 points and seven rebounds.
  • Kion Brown was a force for the Highlanders on the inside, recording his second career double-double with 10 points and a team-best 10 rebounds, which tied a career high set two years ago. Brown's final points came on a short jumper in double overtime that brought RU to within a point at 74-73.
  • Brown's effort on the glass helped Radford win the battle of the boards, 43-37. They grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, compared to just five for Georgetown.
  • After combining to shoot around 40 percent for most of the game, the teams stepped it up in overtime. The Highlanders made 7 of 13, while GU hit 7 of 11. However, the Hoyas missed all four 3-pointers and were 2 of 7 at the line in the extra periods.
  • RU finished at 43 percent from the floor and was 10 of 25 from deep, while Georgetown shot 47 percent overall and was 7 of 22 from behind the arc.
  • The game featured 18 lead changes and 11 ties, with Georgetown holding the largest lead at eight midway through the second half. The Highlanders went on a 9-2 run from there on baskets by four different players to quickly get back within one.
  • Georgetown made just seven field goals in the first half, but hit 19 of 20 free throws to stay close. The Hoyas converted just 4 of 12 attempts at the line after that.
  • Four of the Highlanders' five true freshmen saw action as Polite, Jr., Christian Lutete, Darius Bolstad and Caleb Tanner each made their RU debuts in the first half. Polite, Jr. scored four points and grabbed three rebounds in 13 minutes. Bolstad had a basket and a rebound before running into foul trouble late in the first half.

QUOTABLE
  • "This was a great way to start our seniors last season, so I am just really happy for them and happy that they were able to come out and execute the way we wanted to and stay in attack-mode all game long. We came out and did the things that we try to do defensively, which is just make it tough. We knew (Georgetown has) a hard offense to guard, but we just tried to make it tough. And offensively, I thought we were aggressive and were able to get some things done in transition. We found a couple of things that worked and we kept going to them." ~ Radford head coach, Mike Jones
