VOLLEYBALL STORMS BACK TO BEAT LIBERTY IN FIVE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The sixth-seeded Radford volleyball team overcame a 0-2 deficit and fended off four Liberty match points in the fifth set before prevailing 17-15 to complete a dramatic victory in the Big South tournament quarterfinals Friday night inside the Millis Center in High Point, N.C.
  • The Highlanders took the final three points of the match on a kill by Maddie Palmer and two from Savanna Burton.
  • The deciding game was back and forth before Liberty scored three straight points to take a 14-11 lead. However, Palmer followed two Flames' errors with a kill to keep the match and RU's season going.
  • After dropping the first two sets, Radford mounted its first rally of the match in the third set, shaking off a 13-8 deficit with a 7-2 run, before pulling away late in the game.
  • The Highlanders then took the last five points of the fourth, getting a kill and an ace by Palmer, two kills by Katherine Young and one by Burton.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Megan Short led the Radford offense, equaling her career high of 25 kills, while compiling a .524 attack percentage.
  • Haley Kleespies notched her 12th double-double of the season, dishing out 59 assists and recording a season-high 15 digs. She also had three aces.
  • Burton had a team and season-high 23 digs to go along with eight kills.
  • Palmer finished with 16 kills, Valerie Gonzalez chipped in 11 kills and seven blocks and Young contributed eight kills and four blocks.
  • Five different Highlanders finished with double-digit dig numbers as Kelby Jackson came up with 19, Cheyanne James had 14 and Kaylor Nash totaled 12.
  • RU totaled 95 digs as a team, compared to 80 for Liberty. Radford also outhit the Flames, .226-.186, and won the blocking battle, 12-9.
  • The Highlanders hit .262 in the third set, held Liberty to .023 in the fourth and then registered a match-high .500 on 26 attacks in the deciding fifth frame.
  • The 0-2 comeback was Radford's third of the season and second in less than a week. RU improved to 5-6 in five-set matches this season.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford advances to Friday's semifinals where it will face No. 7 seed Campbell, which upset second-seeded High Point in three sets.
  • The Highlanders won both regular-season matches with the Fighting Camels, notching a four-set win in Buies Creek and prevailing in five at home.
