THREE-POINT SHOOTING CARRIES RADFORD PAST LONGWOOD, 55-45

RADFORD, Va. – After building a 21-point advantage with just over eight minutes to go, Radford had to withstand a late 12-0 surge by Longwood to hang on for a 55-45 Big South women's basketball victory Tuesday night inside the Dedmon Center.

"First of all, I want to credit Longwood," head coach Mike McGuire expressed. "For them to be short-handed and to play as hard as they did tonight is a testament to their players, their coaches and their program. We are fortunate to win this game."

The Highlanders (14-10, 11-4 Big South) struggled taking care of the ball, ending the game with a season-high 29 turnovers. Ten of those miscues came in the final six minutes of the game, which allowed the Lancers to make their late push and pull within seven (52-45) with 49 seconds remaining. Longwood (3-22, 3-13 Big South) finished with 17 steals—the most by an RU opponent this season.

"Longwood is known for their speed and their pressure, but I just thought we got careless," McGuire said about his team's performance in the closing minutes of the game. "We weren't lined up correctly a couple of times; we had a couple careless passes. This team is better than that, they are smarter than that and they are more experienced than that. I don't want to see [our team] finish a game like that, [especially after building] a 21-point lead."

Radford, which was coming off a season-best 79.4 percent effort from the free-throw line against Presbyterian College, had to secure the win at the charity stripe. Kiera McIvor and Jordynn Gaymon combined to go 3 of 4 at the line to provide the final margin.

Despite the turnover issues, the Highlanders were able to sink 10 3-pointers on the night, tying their season high. Leading the charge behind the arc was Ayana Avery, who finished 5 of 7 from long range en route to a game-high 15 points.

Aisha Foy (12 points) connected on 4 of 8 from 3-point range, including Radford's only made field goal over the final eight minutes of the game. As a team, RU shot 52.6 percent (10-19) from deep.

In addition to her 11 points, Jayda Worthy accounted for seven of Radford's 42 rebounds. The Highlanders won the battle of the boards, 42-26, marking the sixth time this season they outrebounded their opponent by double digits. Janayla White dished out four of RU's 16 assists.

Raven Williams led the Lancers in scoring with 12 points, followed by Micaela Ellis' 10 points. Longwood was held to 30.4 percent shooting, including just 26.1 percent from downtown. The Lancers entered Tuesday night as the Big South leader in 3-pointers made per game (6.7).

With the Highlanders' win, coupled with a High Point loss, RU climbed into second place in the Big South standings heading into Saturday's 2 p.m. Big South tilt at Charleston Southern. Radford would clinch a first-round bye in the Big South women's basketball tournament with a road victory over the Buccaneers.
