RADFORD DOWNS LONGWOOD, STAYS TIED ATOP LEAGUE RACE

|

RADFORD, Va. - This time was different. Radford (18-8, 9-4) avenged an earlier double overtime loss to in-state rival Longwood (7-19, 3-10) Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center with an 80-75 win and remained tied for the top spot in the Big South Conference with three other teams. In the first matchup, RU let slip a 12-point lead in regulation and a six-point edge in overtime. On this night, however, the Highlanders thwarted a Lancer comeback and held on for the win.

Cameron Jones remained one of the hottest players in the conference leading the Highlanders off the bench with 15 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Five RU players scored in double figures on a night when leading scorer, Javonte Green, only had four points. Rashun Davis too came off the bench with 13. Starters YaYa Anderson added 12, and R.J. Price and Brandon Holcomb each chipped in with 11.

Radford scorched its way to a 44-33 halftime lead on 58.6 percent shooting in the second half. The Highlanders hit eight of their 10 made three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. But it was the defense late in the game that kept Longwood from recording another comeback, and ironically, it was Green, who struggled on the offensive end all night, who made the biggest play of the game.

With RU clinging to a 67-66 lead with 3:01 to play, Green came from no where to block Longwood's Ryan Badowski's breakaway dunk attempt and preserve a lead the Highlanders would never relinquish. The offense answered with a 6-0 run after the block to keep the game out of the Lancers' reach.

Radford head coach Mike Jones spoke of his team's finding a way to put this one away, "Any time you can get a conference win in February, it is an awesome feeling. I feel great about how our guys were able to toughen up down the stretch and get the defensive stops we really needed them. It's just a great win and a great feeling after a tough loss to get us back where we belong and back in the right direction."

Longwood is still winless all-time at Radford with the loss. The Lancers are 0-11 in road games vs. the Highlanders.

The Lancers were led by Shaquille Johnson's 22 points. Quincy Taylor added 16 and Leron Fisher 15. Damarion Geter grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Radford stays tied atop the league standings with High Point, UNC Asheville, and Charleston Southern. Winthrop, Coastal Carolina, and Gardner-Webb are all a game back after entering this week's play in a seven-way tie for first.

The Highlanders are on the road Saturday in Clinton, S.C. to face Presbyterian for a 7:30 p.m. start.
