HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ---- Madeline Thomas, Ashlen Veatch and Shania Williams highlighted Radford's opening day of competition at the Chipotle Marshall Invite at the Jeff Small Track in Huntington, W.Va., on Friday with top-5 finishes.

Madeline Thomas posted the Highlanders best finish of the night, coming in second overall in the women's 5,000-meter run. Thomas ran a Radford season-best 17:55.26, defeating third place by nearly eight seconds. Friday's race was only Thomas' second of the indoor season.Â

In the weight throw, Veatch took third place with a throw of 16.32m (53-06.50). Shania Williams improved on her previous personal best of 12.78 meters by nearly 2.5 meters, recording a distance of 15.17m (49-09.25) to finish in fourth place. Naihla Rose-Delia took sixth overall with a mark of 14.79m (48-06.25), which is also a new personal best.

The short schedule on Friday night also included the distance medley relay, in which the Red and White took fifth place. The team of Courtney Burton, Danyelle McDaniel, Cara Myrtle and Denaya Wolterding turned in a 12:49.72. The time is a new Radford season best, beating the mark of 13:29.71 set on Jan. 17 at the Virginia Tech Invite.

The Highlanders have a full slate of events on Saturday to conclude the meet, beginning with the 60-meter hurdle prelims.
