SAMFORD COMEBACK SINKS HIGHLANDERS LATE

|

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Radford stormed to a 7-0 lead on the back of a three-run homer and a two-run double from Patrick Marshall, but could not hold the lead as Samford evened the season-opening series Saturday with a 10-8 victory over the Highlanders.

Marshall hit his first homer of the season in the first inning, and the Highlanders added four more runs in the second. Josh Reavis singled home a pair of runs, and Marshall's double down the left field line gave RU a 7-0 lead.

Samford answered with three runs in the second and chased RU starter Dylan Nelson after 2.1 innings. Five Highlanders pitchers appeared in the game, and none left the game unscored upon. Jeff Maxwell gave up a run in 2.2 innings of relief after recovering in the off-season from arm surgery. Austin Ross and Tyler Swarmer each surrendered an earned run, and Travis McQueen took the loss.

"We got off to a good start, but really couldn't put them away," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "We didn't pitch or defend well enough to win the game. It's just not a good recipe for success."

RU committed three errors in the game and gave up two unearned runs.

McQueen allowed a two-run home in the seventh to tie the game 8-8, and then another two-run shot in the eighth to provide Samford with the winning margin.

Radford loaded the bases in the ninth, but Hunter Higgerson struck out, and Danny Hrbek grounded out to end the game.

For the day, Marshall finished 3-4 with a double, a home run, and five RBI. Reavis was 3-3 with a double and two RBI.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
