RU SECURES SERIES WIN AT SAMFORD

|

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After Samford rallied to tie Sunday's decinding game of the three-game set with Radford, the Highlanders responded with a pair of runs in both the seventh and ninth innings to post an 8-4 series-clinching victory at Griffin Field. Josh Reavis doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh, and Shane Johnsonbaugh plated his third run of the day with a triple in the ninth. Ryan Meisinger earned a six-out save as well.

For the third straight game, RU broke on top early. Josh Gardiner walked with the bases loaded to put the Highlanders ahead, 1-0 in the second inning. Johsonbaugh followed the a two-run single, and Radford led 3-0. Trevor Riggs blasted his first career home run in the third to give RU a 4-2 advantage.

Mitchell MacKeith worked 5.0 innings in his first start of the season, but two runs allowed in the sixth left him with a no-decision despite giving up four runs and striking out six. The Bulldogs got solo home runs from Damon Waller, Austin Edens, and Heath Quinn, but RU pitchers combined for no walks and 12 strikeouts to limit the long-ball damage.

Daniel Bridgeman (1-0) earned the victory in relief. He logged 1.1 scoreless innings allowing a hit and recording a strikeout.

Gardiner notched his third hit of the day and stole second to start the go-ahead rally in the seventh. Reavis plated him with a double to left field, and Danny Hrbek singled home Reavis to give RU the lead for good.

Meisinger came on in the eighth and worked a perfect half inning before the Highlanders add two more insurance runs in their final at bat. Johnsonbaugh's three-bagger knocked in Gardiner, and then he came across on a wild pitch. Meisinger shut the door in the ninth to earn his second save of the young season.

Radford head coach Joe Raccuia was pleased with his team's response from Saturday's loss.

"MacKeith gave us a solid start and the guys in the pen competed and made pitches," Raccuia said. "It was good to see us bounce back after they tied it late. We did a lot of things well after a tough loss yesterday."

Radford is scheduled to play Tuesday at North Carolina A&T, weather permitting.
