SOFTBALL GETS FIRST WIN IN 12-4 ROUT OF GEORGE MASON, FALLS TO WESTERN CAROLINA

Upstate Classic Stats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ----
The Radford softball team tallied its first win of the season in a 12-4 rout of George Mason in the final game of the Upstate Classic at Cyrill Park in Spartanburg, S.C. Whitney Davis earned All-Tournament honors after hitting .600 over the four-game tournament with two homeruns and eight RBI.

"It has been a process to come together, while working through the beginning of the season growing pains," said head coach Maggie White. "We have made progress and will continue to grow as a team. We will enjoy the moment and go back to work tomorrow."

Davis' two homeruns and five RBI highlighted the Highlanders (1-6, 0-0 Big South) victory over the Patriots. Kayla Bishton recorded three hits in four at bats in the contest. Maggie Rowe blew the game open on a grand slam, her first career homerun. Kelsey Weddle started in the circle, logging 3.1 innings with six hits and three earned runs surrendered. Brittany Wratchford got the first win of her career, throwing 2.2 innings and giving up only one hit.

Davis gave Radford its second lead of the game, 6-4, on her second homerun of the contest and 15th of her career. She sent a shot over the left field wall just missing the scoreboard to bring in Bishton, who reached on a single to centerfield. Mantel extended the lead to three with a single to left field to score Rowe. The Highlanders piled on a fourth run in the inning on a single off Mackenzie Blackwell's bat to put Radford up 8-4.

In the sixth, the Red and White loaded the bases with one out for Rowe, and she did not waste the opportunity and connected on a shot over the left field wall for a grand slam. Bishton got the inning started with a single to right and was followed by walks from Casey Burns and Davis. The grand slam put Radford up 12-4.

With two outs in the first inning, Davis put the Highlanders on the board with a two-run homer to right field. Bishton extended the lead to 3-0 on a RBI single played to the gap between first and second base. Mantel, who came in to score, reached after looking at ball four, stole second and then was moved by groundout by Robinson.

George Mason (0-9, 0-0 A-10) tallied two runs in the bottom of the second on a double from Brooke Sullivan. Breanna Boyd reached on a single to center field with one out and advanced to second on a single by Heather Ferguson.  The second run came across when Julia Czarnecki just beat out the throw from short.

Burns opened the top of the third inning with her fourth double of the season. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored from a sac fly by Davis. It was Davis' third RBI of the game.

The Patriots cut the Highlanders' lead back to one on a ground out to the pitcher that scored Christina Gabriele from third. Gabriele reached base on a single to right field that hopped past Bishton and rolled to the warning track.

George Mason put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth inning. A single and walk put two on, and then an illegal pitch advanced the runners with one out for Casey Price. A second walk of the inning loaded the bases. Gabriele knotted the game at four on a ground out to second.

Game 1

After taking an early 1-0 lead, Radford gave up four late runs against Western Carolina (1-2, 0-0 SoCon) to fall 4-1 in the first game on Saturday. All four of the Catamounts runs came with two outs on the board.

Megan Honaker, Nia Chiles, Bishton and Summer Robinson all recorded a hit for the Highlanders in the contest. Abby Morrow went 4.2 innings with four strikeouts before the Catamounts posted two runs. Tiffany Brown came in as relief, striking out two and surrendering two earned runs.

The Catamounts pushed their edge to 4-1 in the seventh with a two-run homer off the bat of Victoria Mariscal with two out. The shot over the left field wall scored Amber Kimrey, who reached base after getting hit by a pitch.

Radford stranded two in scoring position in the final frame after Robinson lined one out to left field and Mackenzie Blackwell reached on balls. Three straight outs sealed the game for Western Carolina.

Honaker opened the game by hitting a chopper up the middle to reach first and tally the Highlanders first hit of the day. With Casey Burns at the plate and one out, Honaker stole second and then third to move 60 feet from Radford's first score of the game, but she was stranded by back-to-back outs.

In the third inning, Chiles reached scoring position after hitting a shot toward third base. She rounded first and went to second as the ball went to the fence in foul territory from the throw to first. After Bishton laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Chiles to third, Honaker played a ball to first but an error put her on base and allowed Chiles to score.

The Catamounts responded in the top of the fifth inning with a runner on third. Courtney Price singled to short, just beating the throw, to score the run and then advanced to second on an error. Western Carolina took its first lead of the game with the next batter, hitting a ball through second base and past Bishton in the outfield for a 2-1 advantage.

Radford takes the field again on Friday, Feb. 20, versus Lehigh at the Tarheel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Highlanders will play four games in Chapel Hill, capping the weekend off against North Carolina on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
