SOFTBALL FALLS TO OAKLAND, ROARS BACK AGAINST MIDDLE TENNESSEE

CLEARWATER, Fla. ---- After stumbling to Oakland, 12-3, in Friday's first game, Radford roared back in the day's second contest to defeat Middle Tennessee, 4-2, at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. Casey Burns went 4-6 on the day with a double and a homerun.

"We had much better effort and execution in the second game," said head coach Maggie White. "We played with high energy and a lot of focus in game two. Tomorrow we will try to do that in game one and continue it throughout the day."

Burns' extra base hits today both came against the Blue Raiders (7-5). She went 2-3 at the plate in both of the day's contests, while scoring two runs and batting in two more. Nia Chiles tallied three hits to improve her season average to .429. Whitney Davis, Becky Mantel, Megan Honaker and Alex Lang all recorded two hits between the two contests. The Highlanders (2-7) saw the ball well on Friday, combining for 15 hits.

Abby Morrow's first complete game of the season highlighted the Red and White in the circle on day one of the USF Under Armour Invite. Morrow threw a season-high six strikeouts, while limiting Middle Tennessee to two runs and two walks.

"The pitchers and fielders have been challenged over the last couple of weeks," White said. "Abby did a great job of stepping up, doing what we asked of her and acting like a leader, which is what we needed after game one today."

Radford opens Saturday against Sacred Heart at 10 a.m. and concludes the day with Central Arkansas at 12:15. In the only meeting between the Red and White and the Pioneers, the Highlanders downed Sacred Heart 5-4 in 1999. This weekend's matchup with the Bears marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

:: GAME 1 :: 5 innings ::
Oakland 12 :: Radford 3

Radford opened the USF Under Armour Invite with a 12-3 loss against Oakland (8-8). After knotting the game at 2-2 in the top third inning, the Golden Grizzlies busted the game wide open with an eight–run fourth.

Honaker and Chiles both went 2-2 at the plate to lead the Highlanders and combined for the team's three runs. Honaker made the trip home twice, while Chiles scored one run. Burns recorded two hits in three at bats. Kayla Bishton, Burns and Chiles batted in Radford's three tallies. Kelsey Weddle started in the circle, giving up four runs on eight hits in three innings. After Radford tied the game at two in the top of the third inning, the Golden Grizzlies reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame with two runs. Julia Morales hit a double to left to score one before Muron singled to score the second.

In the following inning, the floodgates opened as Oakland poured on eight more. Back-to-back singles and walk loaded the bases for the Golden Grizzlies with one out. Four singles and a pair of fielder choices contributed to the run total.

Oakland struck first in the second inning on a homerun from Muron. Cupp singled to get on base and set up the two-shot homer.

The Highlanders responded in the top of the third with a pair of runs. Consecutive singles put two runners on for Bishton. She found a gap in up the middle to score one, as Burns followed it with a single down the left side to score the second.

:: GAME 2 ::
Radford 4 :: Middle Tennessee 2

Radford came out swinging against Middle Tennessee after struggling against Oakland in the morning. Four consecutive runs and a complete game from Morrow proved to be too much for the Blue Raiders.

Burns knocked her first homerun of the season, the Highlanders fifth, to knot the game at one. Burns finished the game with two hits, both for extra bases. Davis went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Burns and Davis combined for two runs apiece. Morrow went for a season-high six strikeouts in the complete-game effort to record her first win of the year.

Carlie Jenkins and Cor'Nisha Birdsong recorded two hits each with an RBI for Middle Tennessee. Megan Chocallo pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits and four runs. It was her first loss in the circle this season.

After Burns tied the game with a solo homerun, Mantel gave Radford the lead in the bottom of the first inning with single up the middle to score Davis. The Highlanders scored two more runs in the third inning to break away from the Blue Raiders. Davis and Mantel both singled in the frame to score runners.

Birdsong doubled off the left center wall to bring home one more runner for Middle Tennessee, but two groundouts to the left side of the infield clinched the game for Radford.
