Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

RADFORD USES STIFLING DEFENSE TO MAKE PROGRAM HISTORY

RADFORD, Va. – Radford clamped down on defense Saturday afternoon inside the Dedmon Center, holding Campbell to 29.6 percent shooting in the Highlanders' 67-43 Big South women's basketball victory.

With Radford's 13th Big South triumph of the season, the Highlanders set a program record for most conference wins in a season and claimed sole possession of second place in the league standings.

"It's hard to put into words how proud I am of this team," head coach Mike McGuire said about the Highlanders reaching a program-record 13 Big South wins. "I knew there would be some struggles early in the season, but to see the maturation and growth of our team since mid-December is just incredible. It's a testament to the young women in our program. All the credit goes to them."

For the fourth time this season, RU (16-11, 13-5 Big South) held its opponent below 30 percent shooting. It was just the fourth time all season the Camels (17-10, 12-6 Big South) were held below 30 percent shooting.

Due to Campbell only hitting one of its first 13 shots (7.7 percent), the Highlanders were able to race out to a 13-2 advantage midway through the first half. The Camels closed the gap to seven (22-15) following a Kiera Gaines fast-break layup with just over five minutes to go in the opening stanza. Campbell got no closer the rest of the game.

RU looked nothing like the team ranking last in the Big South in steals per game. The Highlanders racked up a season-high-tying 10 thefts against CU. Campbell ended the game with 25 turnovers, which were the most by a Radford opponent this season. RU converted those mistakes into a 28-16 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Camels entered Saturday's game on a six-game winning streak and had won five straight in the head-to-head series with Radford. Both streaks came to a screeching halt after the Highlanders recorded their largest margin of victory on the season. Additionally, RU's 24-point spread was the most lopsided win in the Campbell series since Jan. 18, 1992 when the Highlanders prevailed by 30 (83-53) at home.

Jordynn Gaymon guided three Highlanders in double-figure scoring with 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting. She also contributed six rebounds and a career-high four steals. Ayana Avery accounted for four of Radford's six 3-pointers on her way to 12 points. Aisha Foy chalked up 10 points and five assists.

Fluid ball movement keyed the Highlanders' 46.2 shooting efficiency. Radford finished with a season-high 20 assists on 24 made field goals.

"I told the team in the locker room that when you look at this box score, it just screams 'team,'" McGuire pointed out. "We made 24 field goals and had 20 assists. There was great effort and intensity from everyone on both sides of the ball. Everyone who played contributed solid minutes. This was a great win against a very good Campbell team that was playing as well as anyone in the Big South as of late."

Gaines was the lone double-figure scorer for Campbell, delivering 12 points to go along with five steals.

Radford plays its home finale Tuesday at 7 p.m. against UNC Asheville. RU will aim to go 2-0 against the Bulldogs this season after prevailing, 67-65, on Jan. 20 in Asheville, N.C.

Prior to tipoff, Avery, Gaymon, Kiera McIvor and La-She' Walker will be honored as part of Senior Night. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:50 p.m.
