WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ---- The opening day of the 2015 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., was highlighted by the record-shattering 11:57.86 turned in by the Distance Medley Relay team on its way to a Big South title. After Thursday's scored events, Radford sits in fourth place with 26 points.
The squad of Malina Richardson, Danyelle McDaniel, Katie Hickey and Teresa Williamson has become the lone combination to break the 12-minute barrier at the league's indoor championships. The record-breaking medley team crushed the Highlanders' previous school record of 12:14.46 set back in 2013, also at the conference championships. Three of the four runners on that relay returned for this year's record effort. The former Big South Championships record was 12:04.07 set by Liberty last year.
Shania Williams garnered All-Big South honors in the shot put, taking third with a heave of 13.46m (44-02.00). Williams' performance was her second-best mark of the season. She is the first Radford thrower to earn Indoor All-Big South honors in the shot put since Amy Marshall did so in 2008. Naihla Rose-Delia earned points for the Red and White in the event, taking sixth with a distance of 13.10m (42-11.75).
Jessica Shelton tallied the Highlanders first points of the meet, taking fourth in the pentathlon with career high 3194 points. Shelton opened the competition with a first-place performance in the 60-meter hurdles, turning in a 9.03. She continued her strong showing in the pentathlon with a career-best mark of 10.42m (34-02.25) in the shot put and a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a season-best height of 1.52m. (04-11.75).
Monica Mallory gave Radford two more points in the pentathlon, finishing in seventh with personal best 2923 points. A 9.30 in the 60-meter hurdles to take fourth place highlighted Mallory's performance. She placed eighth in the high jump with a 1.49m (04-10.50) and in the shot put with a lifetime best 9.67m (31-08.75).
Williamson and Hickey continued to dominate as the pair took first and second, respectively, in the 800-meter run prelims. Williamson, who entered the competition ranked fourth in the event this season, turned in a 2:16.07, while the top-seeded Hickey ran a 2:17.76. Cara Myrtle just missed out on making an appearance in the finals, finishing in ninth place. Myrtle's 2:20.47 set a new personal record, beating out her previous best set at the Chipotle Marshall Invite on Feb. 14.
Shelton's day continued in the 60-meter hurdle prelims, as she turned in a lifetime best 8.93 to qualify for the finals. It was the fastest time turned in by a Highlander this year.
Friday's events kick off at 10 a.m. with men's heptathlon. Radford's day begins at 10:50 a.m. with the mile. The 4x400-meter relay will wrap up the championships at 2:45 p.m.
