HIGHLANDERS STRAND 14, FALL TO MARIST IN SERIES OPENER

|

RADFORD, Va. - Radford batters went 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14 base runners Friday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to Marist to open a three-game weekend series at RU Baseball Stadium. Meanwhile, the Red Foxes capitalized in two of the three innings they were able to get runners into scoring position with RBI singles to give just enough offensive support to starter Evan Davis.

Davis (1-2) allowed eight hits and walked four in 5.2 innings of work, but surrendered just a single run in getting out of trouble in each of the six innings he appeared. The Highlanders put at least two runners on base all six of those innings, but only a Chris Coia ground out in the sixth produced a run. Radford (7-9) recorded at least one base hit in every inning but the eighth and ninth and still managed a runner in scoring position in those innings as well, but never came through with a run-producing hit. RU had at least one runner reach second base in every stanza.

"Davis did a good job on the mound of not giving our guys a ton of pitches to hit," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "We didn't compete very well at the plate, and we weren't very good today. When you don't fight for at bats and give away chances, you have a tough time winning games."

Marist (1-6) got RBI singles in back-to-back innings in the fourth and fifth from Mark Brennan and Tyler Kirkpatrick, respectively to build a 2-0 lead. The Red Foxes stranded 10 runners themselves, but needed no more offense than the two runs to earn their first victory of the season. Charlie Jerla, Chris Napolitano, and Ryan Thomas worked 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Thomas (1) earned the save in the ninth.

Michael Boyle (2-2) took the loss on the mound after logging 6.0 innings of five-hit baseball. He walked six, however, and struck out four while allowing two earned runs. Zack Ridgely and Daniel Bridgeman relieved Boyle and gave up just one combined hit and struck out five in 3.0 scoreless innings of work.

Radford scored its only run in the sixth. Danny Hrbek led off the inning reaching base after being hit by a Davis pitch. He took second on a wild pitch. Trevor Riggs delivered RU's only base hit with a runner in scoring position to move Hrbek to third before scoring on Coia's groundout.

The two teams will resume the series Saturday at noon. The game time has been moved up two hours with the chance of rain coming into the New River Valley later in the afternoon.
