RU SWEEPS TWIN BILL, TAKES SERIES FROM MARIST

|

RADFORD, Va. - With a walkoff win in game one and an eighth inning rally in game two, Radford (9-9) swept a Sunday doubleheader from Marist (1-8) and took the series from the Red Foxes. The Highlanders won the opener 5-4 in 10 innings and 3-1 in the nightcap to even their season record after 18 games. Ryan Meisinger earned the victory in game one and the save in game two on the mound.

"We pitched really well both games of the doubleheader," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said of his team's play on Sunday. "Our starters gave us quality starts and bullpen did a fantastic job."

GAME 1 • Radford 5, Marist 4 (10 innings)
RU won its first extra-inning game of the season when Danny Hrbek singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Hrbek finished the game 3 for 5 at the plate, including the game-winning hit through the right side of the Marist infield with two outs in the 10th.

The Highlanders rallied to tie the game with two runs in the eighth inning without the benefit of a base hit. Josh Reavis walked to open the inning and advanced into scoring position on a balk. A groundout moved him to third, and Hunter Higgerson drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left field. Aaron Scoville then produced a two-out run on his own to tie the game. Scoville walked, stole second, and scored on consecutive wild pitches from Marist reliever Chris Napolitano.

Meisinger (1-0) earned the victory in relief going 1.2 innings and giving up one hit while striking out a pair. Dylan Nelson earned a quality start with 7.0 innings of work and spreading out seven Marist hits. He walked four and struck out six while allowing three runs, two of them earned. Kyle Palmer also worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Highlanders within striking distance to tie the game and eventually win it in extras.

Scoville scored three times, and Josh Gardiner (2-4), Shane Johnsonbaugh (2-3), and Reavis (2-4) all recorded multiple hits along with Hrbek.

"The first game was a nice walkoff win," Raccuia said. "We didn't play very well offensively, but executed when we needed it."

GAME 2 • Radford 3, Marist 1
The Highlanders scored all three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind to earn the series victory.

After Marist took the lead in the sixth inning in what turned out to be a pitchers' duel between starters Mitchell MacKeith for Radford and Marist's Spencer Bunting, RU rallied for the win after both starters had exited the game. MacKeith went 6.1 innings allowing seven hits and just one run and did not factor in the decision.

Chris Coia led off the decisive eighth being hit by a pitch, and then Gardiner singled. Johnsonbaugh sac bunted both into scoring position, and Reavis tied the game with a sac fly to plate Coia. After Patrick Marshall was intentionally walked, Scoville came off the bench to provide the pinch-hit heroics with a double to right center. Both Gardiner and Marshall scored on the play.

Daniel Bridgeman (2-2) earned the win after spelling MacKeith for 1.2 innings to set up a one-inning save for Meisinger (3). Bridgeman gave up a hit, but no runs in his outing.

"In the 8th inning of the second game we did what we needed to do," Raccuia said. "We pulled a guy off our bench who had been struggling to come up with a big hit. I think he needed that hit, and the team needed that hit too. We are starting to play better defensively, and we are pitching better. Every game might be a nail-biter if we can't find a way to score some runs though."

Radford travels to Virginia Tech for a midweek New River Valley clash on Wednesday. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at English Field in Blacksburg.
