RADFORD, Va. ---- After a five-hour rain delay on Saturday, Radford opened its 2015 home slate with a 5-2 victory over Big South Conference foe Campbell at the Radford Softball Stadium. Taylor Asimakopoulos held the Camels scoreless through six innings and gave up just four hits to earn her first collegiate win.

"It was a big win to start conference play," said head coach Maggie White. "When you start conference season, everyone has a clean slate at 0-0. To start off this way is all you can ask of this team. To come out and protect our home field is huge."

Five different Highlanders (5-11, 1-0 BSC) combined for the team's seven hits against Campbell (13-10, 0-1 BSC). Megan Honaker and Mackenzie Blackwell put the ball in play twice, highlighted by Honaker's two-RBI double in the third that would put Radford ahead for good. It was Honaker's third multi-hit game of the season and first RBI of the year. Casey Burns finished the home opener with a pair of RBI on her sixth double of the season.

Kelsey Weddle started in the circle for the Highlanders, but struggled early to find the strike zone. Asimakopoulos came in with one out in the top for the first and the bases loaded. She held the Camels to just four hits and struck out two in the winning effort.

"Taylor is stepping up," White said. "She sees an opportunity and is earning more and more innings. Taylor spins the ball well and keeps it off the plate, which is what you need."

Ericka Nezbitt, who entered the matchup as Campbell's top bat with a .462 average, led the team with two hits in four at bats. Melissa Tullar and Kerstine Womack had the other two hits. Katie Baker fell to 7-6 on the year with the loss, pitching 3.2 innings and watching five runs come across on five hits.

A hit-by-pitch and a pair of fielding errors loaded the bases for Radford in the second inning with one out on the board and trailing 2-1. Honaker stepped into the box and found a gap in right-center field to score two runs, putting Radford on top 3-2.

Burns added to the lead in the fourth with the 15th double of her career. Kayla Bishton was the first to reach in the frame, hitting a single up the middle that just escaped the pitchers glove. Honaker looked at ball four to put runners on first and second with two out. Burns connected on a pitch and sent it to left center, giving both runners the chance to come home. She now has four RBI this year.

Campbell struck early, scoring two runs on two walks. Weddle was unable to find the plate, walking a pair of batters and putting two others on base with hit-by-pitches.

The Highlanders and the Camels will finish out the series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon. Both contests from the Radford Softball Stadium will be streamed on the Big South Network. Follow the link above or go to the Radford softball schedule page to watch the action.
