HIGHLANDERS REBOUND AFTER GAME TWO LOSS FOR 8-4 VICTORY IN FINALE VS CAMPBELL

GAME 1
Campbell 15 :: Radford 6

GAME 2
Radford 8 :: Campbell 4

RADFORD, Va. ---- After dropping game two of the three-game series, 15-6, on Sunday, Radford softball rallied behind the play of Taylor Asimakopoulos in the circle to clinch the series with an 8-4 victory in the finale. With two wins over Campbell this weekend, the Highlanders earned their first-series win over the Camels since 2012.

"Conference play is the beginning of a new part of the season, and that is our focus right now," said head coach Maggie White. "We have had time to work through some things, and we are ready to go. It was a great start against a great team that is solid in all facets. It was a great weekend."

Becky Mantel led Radford (6-12, 2-1 BSC) at the plate, finishing the day 3-4 with two runs, two RBI and her fourth home run of the season. Mantel finished the weekend with a .500 average against Campbell (14-10, 1-2 BSC), with all three of her hits coming on Sunday. Whitney Davis drove home two runs on the day on three hits. Megan Honaker had her fourth multi-hit game of the year in the series finale, putting the ball in play twice. Honaker notched her first three RBI of the year this weekend and scored a team-high four runs. Radford had six extra base hits in the final two games of the weekend, highlighted by Mantel's homer and a triple by Nia Chiles.

Asimakopoulos was dealing from the circle this weekend, striking out five batters and holding the Camels to four runs in 14 innings. She got her first collegiate start in the series finale, pitching a complete game to earn her second win of the weekend and the season. All three Highlander pitchers saw action in Sunday's first game, with Tiffany Brown getting the start. Brown gave up eight earned runs on five hits in three innings. Kelsey Weddle logged 3.2 innings of work, allowing six more runs to score on seven hits. Asimakopoulos saw one batter in the day's first game, forcing a groundout to end the side.

"It was exciting to see Taylor have the opportunity and really step up," White said. "She is being a leader as a freshman and is taking advantage of every chance she has on the field."

Radford plays its fourth-consecutive home game on Wednesday, March 18, when it hosts New River Valley foe Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. at the Radford Softball Stadium. After this weekend's 2-1 mark at home, the Highlanders are 13-4 since the stadium's renovations and 211-129 overall in Radford.

:: GAME 1 ::
After each side tallied a run in the first, Campbell took a commanding lead in the second on two home runs to bring across five runs. The Camels finished the game with three home runs and three doubles.

Radford's woes in the day's first game came from giving out free bases. As a pitching staff, the Highlanders walked seven batters. Campbell saw the Red and White's pitches clearly, finishing the game with 12 hits.

In the top of the second, a lead off walk set the stage for a two-RBI homer from Bailey Bjorson. A passed ball on a strikeout and a walk put two runners on for Melissa Tullar's home run over the left field wall. The lead grew to 10 in the fourth inning with another five-run frame for the Camels. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases before Camise Pattersson hit one of Campbell's three doubles in the contest to score two. A single, error and sac fly brought around three more runs to finish out the top of the fourth.

Mantel cut into the deficit in the bottom of the side with a solo homer to left field, nearly hitting 'Highlanders' text on the top of the scoreboard. It was Mantel's fourth home run on the year, tying her with Davis for the team lead.

With two out on the board and facing the run rule down nine in the fifth inning, Honaker singled up the middle to extend her hit streak to four games. An ensuing walk by Casey Burns put two runners on the bags with Davis coming up to the plate. Davis found a gap through the left side to score Honaker and put runners in scoring position on the throw. Mantel and Maggie Rowe would both stay disciplined at the plate and look at ball four to load the bases and score a run, bringing the deficit to seven and continue the game.

The Highlanders would make it an 11-6 ballgame in the sixth inning on Burns' seventh double of the season. The Camels promptly ended Radford's 5-0 run in the top of the seventh with four more runs coming on a home run and a double.

:: GAME 2 ::
Less than 24 hours after picking up her first collegiate win, Asimakopoulos was given the ball for her first collegiate start in the series finale on Sunday against Campbell. She answered the call with three strikeouts and limited the high-powered Camel offense to just four runs, as Radford clinched the series with an 8-4 win.

Mantel, Honaker and Rowe all turned in multi-hit performances and each scored a run. Asimakopoulos threw a complete game, giving up 11 hits and four runs.

Once again, both sides scored a run in the first inning. Unlike the day's first game though, it was the Highlanders who would score to break the tie in the second inning. Maggie Rowe took a pitch to the back to reach first, but would be thrown out at second on the fielder's choice off the bat of Summer Robinson. Chiles scored the run on her first extra base hit of the season, making it all the way to third on the ball hit to the warning track. Honaker scored the innings second run to give Radford the 3-1 lead.

The Camels and the Highlanders both posted a run in the third inning to make it a 4-2 score in favor of the Red and White. Mantel scored Radford's run from third on an error by the catcher fielding an infield pop up.

The Highlanders took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs coming across. Davis led off with a single to third and moved to second on a perfectly played sac bunt by Mantel, who nearly beat out the throw to first. A single from Rowe put runners on the corners before Mackenzie Blackwell blasted a ball just under the reach of the second baseman to score Davis. A wild pitch brought one more in. Bishton made it 8-2 with her second double of the season, scoring Lindsay Graham and Blackwell.

Campbell tried mounting a seventh inning rally, scoring two runs. Asimakopoulos gave up three hits in the frame, but stranded two runners with a strikeout and fly ball to end the game.
