HIGHLANDER BATS EXPLODE FOR 11 STRAIGHT RUNS, NELSON EARNS WIN OVER FLAMES

|

RADFORD, Va. - Radford spotted Liberty an early 3-1 lead and then rallied for 11 straight runs and turned the middle game of this Big South opening series into a rout, 12-3, as the Highlanders have taken the first two games of the three-game set. Radford (11-10, 2-0) can complete its first sweep of Liberty (13-8, 0-2) since 2004 with a win in the finale on Sunday.

Dylan Nelson (2-2) gave up a run in the first and a two-run homer to Dalton Britt in the fourth, but battled to log 7.2 innings to even his season record. Nelson gave up three runs on six Liberty hits. He struck out six and issued four walks and was rewarded by his offense in the latter innings.

"Nelson really competed and was a bulldog," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said of his Saturday starter. "He has shown flashes of being electric and today was special."

The RU comeback began in the fifth when Josh Reavis singled home a pair of game-tying runs. Danny Hrbek's run-scoring double in the sixth gave the Highlanders the lead for good. Chris Coia, who finished the day 4-4 with three doubles, beat out an infield single to plate Hrbek as RU rallied for three runs in three straight innings -- the sixth, seventh, and eighth.

"After struggling out the gate, we executed," Raccuia said. "We put pressure on them with runners on base, and played our style. We played fast. It was a very good team win."

Josh Gardiner capped the scoring emphatically with a three-run homer in the eighth, his first round-tripper of the season. He drove in a team-high four runs on the afternoon going 2-4 at the dish. Hrbek also finished 2-4 as three Highlanders recorded multiple hits.

Radford will go for the sweep to start the Big South slate on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at RU Baseball Stadium.
