RU SUFFERS LOSS IN FINALE, TAKES SERIES FROM FLAMES

|

RADFORD, Va. - Radford ran into a stellar pitching performance Sunday at RU Baseball Stadium in the final game of the series against Liberty. Jared Lyons threw a three-hit shutout as the Flames avoided the sweep to open Big South play. LU scored three times in the sixth inning and those were all the runs in the game as Mitchel MacKeith was solid on the mound for the Highlanders as well.

"The Lyons kid had one of the better starts I have seen in a long time against us," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "He threw three pitches for strikes and kept us buried in counts all day."

MacKeith (2-2) went 6.0 strong innings giving up three runs on six hits. The Flames touched him up for three runs in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Will Shepherd and a two-run double by Becker Sankey. It was all the run support Lyons (3-0) would need.

"I thought MacKeith and our bullpen were pretty good today and kept us in the game," Raccuia said. "We just got beat by somebody better on the mound today."

Aaron Scoville recorded Radford's only extra-base hit on the day, a two-out double in the fifth inning. It was the only runner the Highlanders would get into scoring position on the day.

Radford closes out its four-game home stand on Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. start at RU Baseball Stadium against East Tennessee State.
