RADFORD SWEEPS CAMPBELL, TIED FOR BIG SOUTH LEAD

|

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Radford (15-11, 5-1) completed a three-game sweep over Campbell (20-8, 4-5) to win its fourth straight game and into a first-place tie with Coastal Carolina in the Big South standings. Mitchell MacKeith (3-2) gave the Highlanders their third straight pitching gem, and Patrick Marshall drove in three runs to lead RU to a 6-2 victory at Jim Perry Stadium.

MacKeith went 6.2 innings allowing six hits and two runs, which came on the final batter he faced. Cole Hallum's two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh provided the only Camel offense on the day as Highlander pitching shut down the league's top-ranked offense for the third straight day. Daniel Bridgeman relieved MacKeith and logged 1.1 innings of scoreless relief before Ryan Meisinger closed the door in the ninth in a non-save opportunity.

Radford head coach Joe Raccuia lauded his pitching staff's performance on Sunday. "MacKeith continued on the weekend of having great starts. He pumped a lot of strikes, and Bridgeman and Meisinger were great out of the bullpen."

Offensively, the Highlanders proved timely in their opportunities and led from the onset. Josh Reavis stretched a line drive to left-center into a double with one out in the first and scored on a Marshall groundout to give RU a 1-0 lead before MacKeith ever took the hill. The lead pushed to 2-0 on a Marshall sac fly in the fourth.

"We executed on offense and moved some runners got some timely hits to produce runs and complete a sweep against a good team," Raccuia said. "It was a good weekend. We should be pretty excited to come on the road and sweep the series."

A Brad Keen sac fly and a defensive error by the Camels in the seventh allowed Radford to push the lead to 4-0 before Hallum cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning. The Highlanders immediately responded with single runs in the eighth and ninth. Marshall singled home his third run of the day, and Josh Gardiner's sac fly made it 6-2.

With the win and a Winthrop victory over Coastal, the Highlanders are now tied atop the Big South standings with a 5-1 record and having won those games against two of the preseason favorites in the league, Liberty and Campbell. The sweep over the Camels was the first sweep CU has suffered since rejoining the league in 2012. ETSU was the last team to sweep Campbell when it was a member of the A-Sun in 2011.

Radford returns home for a midweek contest Tuesday at RU Baseball Stadium hosting William & Mary at 6:00 p.m.
