RADFORD EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO FIVE WITH WIN OVER TRIBE

|

RADFORD, Va. - Prior to Tuesday's 4-1 win at RU Baseball Stadium, Radford had never defeated William & Mary and Zack Ridgely (1-1) had yet to record his first collegiate victory on the mound. Both of those streaks ended, and the Highlanders pushed their current winning streak to a season-high five games as Ridgely, Austin Ross, and Daniel Bridgeman combined on a four-hit pitching gem.

Ridgely was efficient in 6.0 innings of work allowing just one run and three hits. He struck out six and did not issue a walk. He threw just 81 pitches, 59 of them strikes, in earning his first win as a Highlander in his third career start. Ross was equally impressive out of the bullpen. He gave up just one hit in 2.1 innings and set up Bridgeman to record his first save of the season retiring the only two batters he faced in the ninth.

"It all starts with pitching, and Ridgely did a tremendous job giving us six really good innings," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "He gave us another quality start and you are seeing the results of that with our five-game win streak."

Even with the strong performances on the mound, Radford still had to come from behind to win. After Porter Reinhart doubled in the third, Cullen Large drove him in with a base hit to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead. And W&M's starter, Robert White, did not allow a hit until the fourth. The hit was a loud one, however.

After Josh Gardiner reached on a third strike passed ball, Patrick Marshall put the Highlanders in the lead for good with his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right-centerfield wall.

"We got a timely hit from Marshall with the home run and a two-out hit from Danny Hrbek that was vital for us to extend the lead," Raccuia said.

Indeed, the Highlanders added two important insurance runs in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Marshall's ground ball drove in his third run of the night and team-high 29th of the season. Hrbek made it a 4-1 game with a single to centerfield. Hrbek (2 for 4) and Chris Coia (2 for 3) were the only Highlanders to record multiple hits on the night.

White (2-2) took the loss on the mound for the Tribe going 5.0 innings and allowing two runs, one earned. Radford is now 1-7 all-time against William & Mary.

Radford takes its winning streak back on the road and back to Big South play on Thursday at Gardner-Webb in the first of a three-game series. The Highlanders are currently tied with Coastal Carolina atop the conference standings at 5-1.
