BOYLE, HOME RUNS LEAD RADFORD TO SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN

|

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Radford ace Michael Boyle proved yet again to head coach Joe Raccuia why he gets the ball in the series opener on the weekends. Thursday he went 8.0 innings allowing three hits in a 2-1 win for the Highlanders at Gardner-Webb. Patrick Marshall and Danny Hrbek each hit solo home runs to provide the RU offense, and Ryan Meisinger earned his sixth save working a perfect ninth.

Boyle (5-2) struck out 10 and gave up just one run, a solo home run by Tyler Best with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. The blast, Best's first of the season, gave the Runnin' Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead for their ace, Erik Heiligenstadt (2-2). The two aces turned this series opener into a true pitchers' duel. Heiligenstadt took a tough loss after going 7.2 innings and giving up six hits, but two of the six were the solo home runs to Marshall and Hrbek.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Marshall lifted a no-doubter over the right-centerfield fence to tie the game. The dinger was his sixth of the season and his 30th RBI. Both team highs. Two batters later, Hrbek hit his second of the season and provided the winning margin for the Highlanders.

"You saw tonight two pretty good pitchers go pitch-for-pitch against each other," Raccuia said. "Boyle did a great job, and Meisinger shut the door like we are used to seeing. We had one more swing in our bats than they did. It's always good to win baseball games."

Meisinger was untouchable in the ninth. He struck out all three batters he faced in earning his sixth save of the season.

The start of the game was delayed 55 minutes by a weather delay, but with the efficiency of each pitcher, the game lasted just 2:38.

Win the win, Radford has won six straight games, a season high. The Highlanders improve to 17-11 and remain tied with Coastal Carolina atop the Big South standings at 6-1. Gardner-Webb falls to 17-13 and 5-5 in the Big South. The two teams will play the middle game of the series on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
