HIGHLANDERS STRETCH WINNING STREAK TO 7 GAMES

|

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - With a 9-5 victory Friday at Gardner-Webb, Radford extended its winning streak to seven games and assured itself of a fourth straight series win after taking the first two games over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Dylan Nelson logged 7.0 strong innings on the mound, and Chris Coia was 4 for 4 at the plate and scored three runs to lead RU.

For the second straight day, Radford spotted GWU an early run and came back to win. Shane Johnsonbaugh's bases loaded walk tied the game in the third. It was the first of six straight runs the Highlanders would score to take control of the game. Aaron Scoville squeeze bunt in the fourth drove home the go-ahead run, and helped produce another run when an error was made on the throw to first. Radford scored twic in the inning to lead 3-1.

A two-run single by Josh Reavis and a Hunter Higgerson run-scoring base hit capped a three-run fifth to make it 6-1.

Nelson (4-2) threw 100 pitches and allowed six hits and two runs before leaving with an 8-2 lead heading into the eighth. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with Nelson out of the game with three runs in the eighth and twice brought the tying run to the plate. Travis McQueen allowed three base hits to all three batters he faced and was charged with three runs in his relief appearance. Tyler Swarmer recorded an out, but gave up two more hits before Kyle Palmer doused the rally with 1.2 scoreless innings to close the game and earn his first save of the season.

"Nelson gave us another quality start, and Palmer did a nice job getting through the eighth and ninth," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "Coia was really good both at the plate and defensively at shortstop.  This wasn't the cleanest game, but at the end of the day it's a win, and we are learning how to win in different ways."

Radford can equal the school record for consecutive victories Saturday when the Highlanders and Runnin' Bulldogs play the final game of the series at 2:00 p.m.
