COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON TAKES OPENING GAMES OF SERIES

|

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Radford (5-7) had to adjust its home series with College of Charleston to a road series against the Cougars, who were two one-run game from reaching the College World Series in Omaha a year ago. The Cougars (8-3) won the first two games of the three game set Saturday at Patriot's Point, 3-1 and 10-4.

GAME 1 • CofC 3, RU 1
A classic pitcher's duel between the two staff aces lived up to its billing as Radford's Michael Boyle (2-1) and Charleston's Taylor Clarke (3-0) went head-to-head on the mound. Boyle went 5.0 innings and spread around seven hits before surrendering a pair of runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. He struck out nine and walked two.

Clarke, however, was nearly untouchable. He set a College of Charleston school record with 18 strikeouts and did not allow a free pass in the complete game victory. The Highlanders did scratch five hits off the Cougar ace, and trailing 3-0 entering the ninth, scored a run and brought the tying run to the plate. Patrick Marshall's double plated Jimmy Brennan, who led off the inning with a double over the bag at third base. Hunter Higgerson struck out swinging to end the game as the potential tying run.

"The Clarke kid was really, really good today," RU head coach Joe Raccuia said. "That was as dominating performance on the mound as I have seen in a while."

GAME 2 • CofC 10, RU 4
Radford committed four fielding errors, including three in a four-run first inning for College of Charleston, and Dylan Neson (1-2) took the loss on the mound. Two of the four runs in the first inning were unearned when both Josh Gardiner at second base and Chris Coia at shortstop made fielding errors on potential double play ground balls that kept the inning alive for the Cougars.

Nelson settled in and worked into the fifth inning giving up six runs, three unearned, on just four base hits. Radford scrapped its way back into the game with three straight runs to cut the lead to 4-3 after the top of the fifth inning. But the Cougars rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth and then put the game out of reach with a four spot in the sixth.

Josh Gardiner was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. Josh Reavis and Marshall also drove in a run for the Highlanders.

Eric Bauer (2-2) earned the win on the mound after going 4.0 innings as a starter in the seven-inning contest.

"We just didn't give Nelson any help defensively out of the gate," Raccuia said. "He made enough pitches to control the first inning, but we didn't turn two double plays, and when you give a good team like Charleston more opportunities, they will make you pay."

The Highlanders will try to salvage the final game of the series at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
